In Bangladesh, Fish is a major source of daily protein intake of millions of people but most of the fishes are consumed here as fresh fish which is highly susceptible to damage during transportation and marketing. Therefore, an innovative approach was undertaken to process the fish to avoid damage and extend shelf-life while preserving the nutritional qualities to facilitate the more efficient use of fish as a source of protein and other essential nutrients. This study was conducted to develop some dried protein-enriched fish powders from some commonly consumed fish species in Bangladesh and the nutritional, sensorial, and safety qualities were assessed. Five indigenous abundant fish species including small indigenous fish (SIS) and carp fishes namely Awaous grammepomus, Channa punctata, Puntius puntio, Hypophthalmichthys molitrix and Labeo rohita were used for the preparation of dried protein-enriched fish powders. Biochemical, trace elements, sensorial, total viable count (TVC), pH, peroxide value, and moisture reconstitution during 90 days storage period were performed by standard analytical methods. A total of 72 as hatched Cobb 500 broilers were fed ad libitum on a diet with 0 %, 0.5 %, 1.0 % and 1.5 % of coriander seed meal (CSM) to assess its feeding value. Treatment group with 1.5 % of CSM significantly (p<0.05) affected live weight of broilers at the age of 28 and 35 days. Among the dietary groups there is no significant difference in feed intake and feed efficiency. Meat yield characteristics especially abdominal fat level decreased significantly (p<0.01) at 1.5 % level of CSM. Cost of production per kg live broiler decreased when dietary inclusion level was increased. Profit per kg of live broiler was significantly (p<0.05) increased with the increase levels of dietary CSM. These results suggest that the CSM could be considered as a potential natural growth promoter for poultry, and showed the best responses at a 1.5 % level of inclusion. The study was conducted to determine growth performances and bioaccumulation of Cr, Cu, Cd, Pb and Ni in fish organs such as intestines, muscle and gills of study species after culturing them for twelve weeks by using different commercial fish feeds. The highest average daily gain (ADG, g/day) and specific growth rate (SGR; %/day) were found in fish fed quality feed and lowest values were found in the fish fed mega feed. Best feed conversion ratio (FCR) value was found in fish fed quality feed among five different feeds. In cultured Koi, the concentration of heavy metals were found higher than initial concentration in fish feeds and collected fingerling samples. Heavy metal levels in cultured fish was Cu > Pb > Cr > Cd > Ni and levels of bioaccumulation in individual organs was intestines > gills > muscle. The concentration of Cu, Pb and Cr exceed the tolerable limit approved by FAO in fishes cultured with the experimental feeds. The study was conducted to find out the performance of broiler birds fed different levels of potato meal (PM). The levels of potato meal in the different treatment rations were control 0, 5, 10, and 15 g/kg, respectively. Dietary levels of PM did not affect live weight at 7, 21, 28, 35 and 42 days of age.However, live weight of broiler differed significantly (p<0.05) among different levels of PM in the diet at 14 days of age and increasing level of PM had a tendency to decrease live weight between 7 and 14 days of age. Feed intake increased linearly with the increasing level of dietary PM (p<0.05) up to 35 days of age followed by a decline at 42 days of age. At 14 days of age, feed intake in control diet and 10g PM diets were similar and intermediate, it was highest in 15g PM and lowest on 5g PM diet. However, feed intake did not differ (p>0.05) among different levels of PM in diet at 21, 28, 35, and 42 days of age.Feed conversion ratio (FCR) decreased between 7 and 14 days of age with the least conversion observed at 15 g/kg PM level. FCR didn't differ significantly (p<0.05) among different levels of PM in diet.Mortality did not alter due to the increasing levels of PM regardless of age of broiler. Dietary PM did not modify the dressing yield, breast meat, thigh meat and other carcass traits. Feed cost in different dietary PM groups were more or less similar, whereas total production cost per kg broiler were increased in 10 % Potato Meal than control (p<0.05). However, sale price (Taka/broiler) and sale price (Taka/kg broiler) were more or less similar in all treatments. Profit per broiler and per kg broiler were reduced as the PM level increased in the diet. It was therefore concluded that use of potato meal at 5 to 15g/kg diet may not be suitable for growth and profitability in broiler production.
The study describes traditional fishing gears and crafts available at Gumti river of Muradnagarupazila in Cumilla district, Bangladesh. The study was carried out by the collection of primary data through surveying individual fishermen. We found that there are 6 fishing gears available in the study area. Among them, 5 types of the fishing net (i.e., cast nets, seine net, lift net, push net, gill net) and a kind of fishing trap was identified. We also found 4 different types of crafts, including dinginauka, koshanauka, chandinauka, and sototempu. Synthetic twines are used for net making, which increases the fishing efficiency significantly. The life span of these nets varies according to their building materials. Sun-drying was the best approach for net preservation rather than using any chemicals or medicine. Besides, traditionally mehogany, raintree, shill koroi, garjan, gamari, jarul, chapulis woods and bamboos were found to be boat construction materials. The boats are painted with tar or pitch and burn oil for the protection. No modern instruments such as a compass, life-saving equipment are used by these boats.
