Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) consist of many sensor nodes which are vital to various applications in our daily lives. Optimizing energy usage is a key challenge for WSNs. Improving energy utilization can help with controlling traffic, saving energy and eventually, resulting in a better lifetime. In this paper, a modification of the Energy Efficient Credit-Based routing algorithm is proposed, which selects the most optimal Cluster Head based on the priority of relay nodes. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm achieves a more efficient load-balancing, a better lifetime, and lower energy consumption, at the expense of slightly higher packet loss and lower data delivery rate. The results are compared with the commonly used Low-Energy Adaptive Clustering Hierarchy algorithm.
