Diabetes mellitus ist die häufigste endokrine Störung weltweit. Es handelt sich dabei um eine Erkrankung, die vorrangig den Glukosehaushalt betrifft. Die Prävalenz des Diabetes mellitus hat weltweit in den vergangenen Jahren zugenommen und liegt derzeit in Deutschland bei ca. 7 % [1]. In der Bundesrepublik wird zurzeit mit etwa 6 Mio. Diabetikern gerechnet -mit steigender Tendenz. Die Klassifikation des Diabetes nach den Vorgaben der WHO (Tab. 1) hat sich international durchgesetzt und bewährt. Für die Schwangerschaft existiert daneben noch eine weitere Klassifikation des präexistenten Diabetes von der Diabetologin Priscilla White aus dem Jahr 1968, die später noch ergänzt wurde (Tab. 2) und das fetale Outcome im Verhältnis zu Wird im 1. Trimenon eine Glukosetoleranzstörung bestätigt, handelt es sich sehr wahrscheinlich um einen präkonzeptionell unerkannten Diabetes mellitus.
