A protocol was established for simultaneous measurements of zircon U-Pb ages and trace elements by LA-ICP-MS at spot sizes of 16−32 μm. This was accomplished by introducing N 2 into ICP to increase the sensitivity. The obtained U-Pb ages for zircon standards GJ-1, TEMORA and SK10-2 are consistent with the preferred values within about 1% uncertainty (2σ) by simple external calibration against zircon standard 91500. Different data reduction softwares could yield different uncertainties for calculation of U-Pb ages. The commercially available program GLITTER4.4 could apply an improper uncertainty calculation strategy, but it may yield artificial high precisions for single analyses. Our trace element analyses indicate that Si is not an ideal internal standard for zircon when calibrated against the NIST glasses. Calibration against the NIST glasses using Si as an internal standard, a systematic deviation of 10%−30% was found for most trace elements including Zr. However, the trace element compositions of zircon can be accurately measured by calibration against multiple reference materials with natural compositions (e.g., BCR-2G, BHVO-2G and BIR-1G), or calibration against NIST SRM 610 and using Zr as an internal standard. Analyses of two pieces of GJ-1 demonstrate that it is relatively homogenous for most trace elements (except for Ti). Environmental quality of the northeastern Qinghai-Tibet Plateau has attracted more attention due to increasing anthropogenic disturbance. Therefore, this study investigated the distribution, pollution, ecological risks, and bioaccumulation of 12 target heavy metals and 16 rare earth elements (REEs) in soils of this area. The average concentrations of target trace elements in soils ranged from 0.16 (Hg) to 500.46 (Cr) mg/kg. Pb caused more serious pollution than the other elements based on geo-accumulation index evaluation. Hg exhibited the strongest enrichment feature with the average enrichment factor of 8.41. Compare with modified contamination degree and pollution load index, Nemerow pollution index method obtained the most serious evaluation results that 45.67% and 16.54% of sampling sites possessed high and moderate pollution. Evaluation results of potential ecological risk index showed that trace elements in soils posed very high and considerable ecological risks in 34.65% and 7.09% of sampling sites, respectively. Mining area was the region with the most serious pollution and ecological risks. Average bioaccumulation factor (BCF) values of target trace elements ranged from 0.05 (REEs) to 2.67 (Cr). Cr was the element that was easier to bio-accumulate in plants of the study area than the other target elements. It is in urgent need to take effective measures for controlling current pollution and potential ecological risks of trace elements in soils of the northeastern Qinghai-Tibet Plateau.
Comprehensive information on heavy metals in coastal waters at national scale of China is limited. Therefore, this study investigated the distribution, pollution, and ecological-health risks of heavy metals in coastal waters along 18,000 km coastline of China. Total 13 target heavy metals in coastal waters along coastline of China showed drastic spatial variations with average concentrations ranging from .14 (Cd) to 136.26 (Cu) lg/L. Cu was the dominant heavy metal with the maximal concentration of 1485.92 lg/L. Three methods including heavy metal pollution index (HPI), Nemerow index (NI), and contamination degree (CD) were adopted to explore heavy metal pollution. HPI obtained the worst-case evaluation results to illustrate that heavy pollution occurred at over 50% of sampling sites. Anthropogenic sources were the main sources of heavy metals in the coastal waters. Approximately 28.13% and 9.38% of sampling sites illustrated considerable and very high ecological risks, respectively. Metals including Cu, As, and Hg were the main pollution and risk contributors. Heavy metals in coastal waters posed high cancer risks and unacceptable non-cancer risks to both adults and children. Therefore, effective control of heavy metals is necessary for regional sustainability and well-beings of residents in coastal regions of China.
