Se estudió la diversidad genética y la heterosis específica entre híbridos comerciales de maíz (Zea mays L.) liberados en Jalisco, México en la década de 1990. Los objetivos fueron identificar las mejores combinaciones entre los híbridos comerciales y definir pares heteróticos para la formación, en el corto plazo, de híbridos entre variedades y entre líneas en el mediano y largo plazo; asimismo, confirmar si las cruzas entre híbridos comerciales significan una mejor opción de obtención de semilla de autoconsumo, en comparación con el uso de generaciones avanzadas (F2) de los mismos híbridos. Se utilizaron nueve híbridos comerciales de maíz, divididos en dos grupos de seis con tres híbridos en común. Los cruzamientos entre híbridos así como sus generaciones F1 y F2 se evaluaron en cinco ambientes de Jalisco en condiciones de secano. Se calculó la diversidad genética (DG), los porcentajes de heterosis y los efectos genéticos de heterosis. Los promedios de DG entre los híbridos comerciales fueron: 0.76 y 0.97 para los Grupos 1 (A-7520, H-357, P-3296, C-220, Tornado y D801B) y Grupo 2 (A-7573, H-357, P-3066, C-220, Tornado y D-880), respectivamente; los cuales, se considera que no reflejan riesgos de vulnerabilidad genética en la producción de grano de maíz en Jalisco. La heterosis promedio para rendimiento de grano en el Grupo 1 (-9.8 %) y Grupo 2 (3.1 %) sugiere que existen cruzas con rendimientos de grano comparables a los de sus híbridos progenitores F1. Las combinaciones entre híbridos comerciales, como P-3296 x H-357 y A-7573 x H-357, podrían usarse como pares heteróticos en el desarrollo de nuevos híbridos. Se confirmó la superioridad en rendimiento de las cruzas entre híbridos sobre la F2 de los mismos.
En los programas de mejoramiento genético de maíz (Zea mays L.) de la región centro-occidente de México se han utilizado materiales genéticos adaptados, principalmente híbridos comerciales, poblaciones mejoradas y materiales exóticos provenientes de otras áreas. En este estudio se midieron las relaciones fenotípicas y genéticas entre poblaciones de maíz adaptadas y exóticas, para definir su mejor aprovechamiento genético, mediante técnicas de análisis multivariado (gráficas Biplot) y análisis de agrupamiento de materiales adaptados, exóticos y sus cruzas con caracteres agronómicos y componentes del rendimiento de mazorca. Se confirmó que el rendimiento de grano sigue siendo la variable más importante en la caracterización de materiales genéticos, en combinación con calidad de mazorca, acame y variables descriptivas del ciclo de madurez (floración masculina y femenina). Las técnicas de agrupamiento separaron con claridad los materiales adaptados de los exóticos, con excepción de las cruzas entre exóticos de más alto rendimiento (‘Pob49 x P-3394’ y ‘Pob32 x P-3394’), las cruzas que involucraron materiales exóticos con germoplasma tropicalsubtropical en su genealogía (‘Pob32 x SynB73’ y ‘Pob49 x Pob32’), y las cruzas que posiblemente involucraron materiales templados en su obtención (‘A-7573 x P3066’). En las cruzas de adaptados x exóticos, las combinaciones con ‘SynB73’ y ‘P-3394’ se ubicaron en el grupo opuesto al de las cruzas con ‘SynMo17 y ‘Blanco de Ocho’, y en el grupo intermedio predominaron cruzas con ‘Pob49’ y ‘Pob32’.
