The production of Capsicum for ornamental purposes in Brazil has increased in recent years. To support the activities of this promising market, it is essential to develop new cultivars by hybridization. The knowledge of cross compatibility is also important in plant evolution research as it provides new genetic combinations and promotes speciation. There are few records of intraspecific compatibility studies in Capsicum. The objective of this work was to evaluate and describe cross compatibilities in accessions of Capsicum annuum. This experiment was carried out in a greenhouse at Universidade Federal da Paraiba (UFPB). Nine lines of Capsicum annuum (UFPB 45, UFV 46, UFPB 132, UFPB 134, UFPB 390, UFPB 392, UFV443, UFV 448, and UFV 449), belonging to the Horticultural Germplasm Bank of UFPB and Universidade Federal de Viçosa (UFV), were chosen for the study based on their broad genetic background and phenotypic diversity. They were crossed according to a full diallel schedule. The manual crosses were made at pre-anthesis stage in emasculated flowers. The percentage of fruit set was estimated as the number of fruits formed divided by the total crosses made and varied from 20 to 100%. The intraspecific compatibility varied both with the direction of the crossings and the parents used in the crossing, showing intraspecific incompatibility exists and depends on the genotypes. Parthenocarpic fruits and fruits with very few seeds were observed. Some fruits showed apocarpy. Some crosses showed anthocyanin in the placenta tissues. The knowledge of the intraspecific compatibility as well as of the direction of crossing is extremely important for success in hybrid breeding programs.
The objective of this work was to evaluate the influence of seasonality on the diversity and richness of the edaphic macrofauna during the dry and rainy periods, in an area of Caatinga in the Brazilian semiarid region. Samples were collected in a sample grid, totaling 10 points, spaced 30 meters apart, in rainy and dry seasons. For quantitative assessment of macrofauna, the total number of organisms (species abundance) was measured, according to diversity. The diversity of the soil macrofauna for this research corresponds to the following order: Hymenoptera> Diptera> Aranaea> Orthoptera> Coleoptera, for the rainy and dry periods, with a greater predominance of the order Hymenoptera. The influence of seasonality was observed in relation to the richness and diversity of the region's macrofauna, with marked fluctuations between the rainy and dry periods.
Peppers present a very diversified market and have a high economic and nutritional value. The study of genetic control of quantitative traits helps to conduct an efficient breeding program. This study aimed to estimate the genetic parameters and gene effects involved in the inheritance of morpho-agronomic traits in ornamental pepper (Capsicum annuum L.). The experiment was carried out in a greenhouse, at the Plant Biotechnology Laboratory, at the Federal University of Paraíba. Two accessions of ornamental pepper (C. annuum L.) belonging to the vegetable germplasm bank of the Federal University of Paraíba were used as parents: UFPB 347 and UFPB 356. The experimental design was completely randomized, with five plants of each parent being evaluated, 20 plants of generation F1, 90 plants of generation F2 and 40 plants of RC1 and RC2. Foram avaliados 19 caracteres quantitativos referentes à planta, flor e fruto. Os dados obtidos foram submetidos à análise de geração, e os efeitos dos modelos foram submetidos ao teste t no nível de 5% e 1% de significância. Alta herdabilidade em sentido amplo foi encontrada para comprimento da corola, diâmetro das pétalas, peso do fruto, comprimento do fruto e espessura do pericarpo. Para herdabilidade restrita, apenas o comprimento da corola apresentou herdabilidade alta. O modelo aditivo-dominante (m, a, d) foi adequado para explicar os parâmetros genéticos da maioria das características avaliadas, com exceção do comprimento da antera e do teor de matéria seca, para os quais o modelo completo foi interpretado. Datura metel L. belongs to Solanaceae family and presents medicinal and ornamental potential. The use of D. metel as an ornamental plant is still unexplored, however there is a need to gather more information about this species planting, especially for pot cultivation. This study aimed to verify the effects of different pot sizes in the development of D. metel, in order to enable the use of this species in the potted flower market. The work was conducted in a greenhouse at the Biotechnology Department located at Center of Agricultural Sciences of the Federal University of Paraíba (CCA-UFPB), Areia, PB, Brazil. The experimental design used was completely randomized with 3 treatments (pot sizes: T1 = 0.82 dm3, T2 = 1.55 dm3 e T3 = 3.68 dm3) and 10 replications. The variables analyzed were: plant height, stem diameter, canopy diameter, number of ramifications, leaf length, leaf width, leaf number, flower number, flower length, flower diameter, chrolophyll a e chrolophyll b. The data obtained was submited to analysis of variance and later on clustered based Tukey’s test (5%). All the analyses were made on GENES software. There is variation between treatments for characteristics evaluated. Treatments 2 (1.55dm3) and 3 (3.68dm3) had similar values and the highest mean values for the characteristics of plant height, number of leaves and chlorophyll b. The size of the vase influences the development of the Angel’s trumpet (D. metel). Pot size influences D. metel development. The medium size recipient (1.55 dm3) is recommended for cultivation of D. metel because it presents ideal plant development, such as plant height and number of leaves, for use with ornamental species pots.
