Introduction: The self-assessment questionnaires are useful to measure the emotional and social/transient consequences resulting from hearing loss, and they can be used in a wide range of situations in the clinical routine, such as auditory screening. Objective: Check the sensitivity and specificities of HHIA-S and HHIE-S questionnaires to identify a hearing loss and their usages in auditory screenings, as well as analyze the ability of these questionnaires to detect different degrees of hearing impairments in the studied people. Method: Retrospective study with 51 individuals aged between 18 and 88, who filled out the Hearing Handicap Inventory for Adults Screening Version -HHIA-S and Hearing Handicap Inventory for the Elderly Screening Version -HHIE-S questionnaires at the waiting room of the Brazilian Unified Health System (SUS)'s otorhinolaryngology infirmary. Results: The instruments showed a low sensitivity (47%), not identifying individuals with a hearing loss; however, they showed a high specificity (75%), accurately identifying individuals with no hearing disorder. Moreover, no significant association between the degree of hearing loss and the constraint degree for participation was found. Conclusion: the aforementioned questionnaires revealed a low sensitivity and a high specificity, proving to be ineffective for auditory screenings in a group with previous hearing complaints in addition to being unable to detect different types and degrees of hearing impairment.
OBJETIVOS: verificar os achados da triagem imitanciométrica e dos testes da avaliação simplificada de processamento auditivo em escolares. MÉTODO: participaram da pesquisa alunos de 1ª a 4ª séries, de sete a dez anos de idade, de uma escola de ensino público de Porto Alegre. Foram avaliados 130 escolares na triagem imitanciométrica, que foi constituída por timpanometria e pesquisa do reflexo acústico ipsilateral e avaliação simplificada do processamento auditivo, incluindo testes de localização sonora, memória sequencial para sons verbais e memória sequencial para sons não verbais. RESULTADOS: na triagem imitanciométrica 43,08% dos escolares passaram, tendo a curva tipo A como mais frequente. O reflexo acústico em 4000 Hz teve percentual de presença inferior comparado com os demais. Passaram nos testes da avaliação simplificada do processamento auditivo 76,15% das crianças. Além disso, foi observado que o teste no qual os escolares obtiveram pior desempenho foi o de memória sequencial para sons verbais. Falharam na triagem imitanciométrica e na avaliação simplificada de processamento auditivo 12,3% dos escolares. CONCLUSÃO: a curva timpanométrica tipo A foi a mais frequente na população estudada. Na avaliação simplificada do processamento auditivo a maioria dos sujeitos passou, tendo maior frequência de acertos no teste de localização sonora. Não houve associação estatística entre o resultado da triagem imitanciométrica e o resultado da avaliação simplificada de processamento auditivo.
Summary It is paramount to assess the psychometric properties of self-assessment tools in order to check the tests' reliability and validity, also to enable proper outcome interpretation. Aim to check the psychometric properties of the IOI-HA (International Outcome Inventory for Hearing Aids) in its Portuguese version, called QI-AASI (International Questionnaire - Individual Sound Amplification Device), in terms of internal uniformity, correlation between the items and reproducibility. Study design: descriptive, observational and cross-sectional. Materials and Methods the questionnaire was deployed to 53 hearing aid users, 34 females and 19 males, with ages between 19 and 92 years - from incomplete basic education to complete higher education, encompassing subjects with monoaural and binaural sound amplification. Results the QI-AASI had a Cronbach Alpha of 0.69. In the correlation among the items, there were numerous significant correlations. The instrument was properly reproducible, except for item # 6, which presented a significant difference in comparing test and the retest. Conclusions the QI-AASI is suggested in the rehabilitation process of users of hearing aides; nonetheless, the questionnaire can be difficult for subjects with low social and economic status when self-employed.
Introduction: Speech stimuli are used as part of basic audiological assessment for speech recognition analysis, and validated materials are required for this purpose. Purpose: To perform construct validation of new lists of monosyllables for speech audiometry assessment. Methods: The speech recognition percentage index was determined with two materials: two new lists of monosyllables, which were validated for content and considered to be equivalent, and the list of Pen and Mangabeira-Albernaz (1973), considered as the gold standard in the clinical routine of speech audiometry assessment in Brazil. The former were presented as recorded material and the latter, via monitored live voice, by the same speaker. Individuals living in the same city where the research was conducted and who had moderate to moderately severe hearing loss in at least one ear were selected from a database. Twenty right-handed subjects -aged between 18 and 44, with mixed or conductive and sensorineural hearing loss -participated in this research. The scores resulting from the application of these lists were correlated. Data were analyzed by ear; there was a total of 18 right ears and 18 left ears. Results: There was no statistically significant difference between the right and left ears. There was a strong correlation between the new lists previously developed for this research and the list of Pen and Mangabeira-Albernaz in different hearing loss groups. When comparing the pairs of resulting scores, there was also a strong linear correlation between the new lists and the list of Pen and MangabeiraAlbernaz. Conclusion: The new monosyllable lists were validated for the construct.
RESUMO Objetivo Elaborar novas listas de monossílabos para realização de testes logoaudiométricos na Língua Portuguesa, realizar a validação de conteúdo, considerando lado da orelha e escolaridade e verificar a equivalência entre as listas. Método Foram selecionados 125 monossílabos com diferentes estruturas silábicas, os quais foram submetidos ao processo de validação de conteúdo, que incluiu o julgamento quanto à familiaridade, organização das listas, gravação do material e reconhecimento auditivo. Após a validação de conteúdo, as listas de monossílabos foram submetidas à pesquisa de equivalência, a fim de obter evidências de fidedignidade para o instrumento de teste proposto. Resultados Cinco listas com 25 monossílabos foram elaboradas e analisadas quanto ao conteúdo, destas, quatro listas foram validadas. Não houve diferença estatisticamente significante entre as respostas obtidas nas orelhas direitas e esquerdas. A escolaridade dos sujeitos não influenciou o reconhecimento das palavras. Quanto à pesquisa de equivalência, verificou-se que duas listas foram equivalentes, uma não equivalente, porém semelhante e uma lista foi diferente das demais, e então excluída. Conclusão Duas listas de monossílabos foram validadas quanto ao conteúdo e consideradas equivalentes, com igual nível de dificuldade entre si e uma lista foi considerada semelhante, podendo ser utilizada como treino para aplicação do teste na bateria audiológica. As listas validadas não sofreram influência segundo o lado da orelha e escolaridade.
