EVALUATION OF PHYSICAL AND MECHANICAL PROPERTIES OF WOOD FROM FIVE SPECIES AS A FUNCTION OF DETERIORATION IN TWO ENVIROMENTS
A New Trap Model for Scolytinae and Platypodinae (Insecta, Coleoptera) ABSTRACTThe insect monitoring is a relevant activity in the process of assessing forest stands health, as well as in ecological studies. Thus, in general, surveys are conducted using capture traps; for the Scolytinae and Platypodinae especially, groups impact traps are used, baited with alcohol 96 ºGL. This paper aims to describe a new trap model, denominated SEMI-FUNNEL. The project suggests the use of alternative materials in the trap manufacturing: 2000 mL PET bottle, plastic hose, plastic plate and wire, thereby seeking the reduction of costs.
As espécies utilizadas foram, Eucalyptus urophylla S T Blake, "eucalipto" (Myrtaceae), Melia azedarach L., "cinamomo" (Meliaceae), Lophantera lactescens Ducke, "lanterneira" (Malpighiaceae), Pinus elliottii Engelm, "pinus" (Pinaceae), Inga marginata Willd, "ingá" (Mimosaceae). This research had as objective to evaluate the natural degradation of a sample of a timber recently felled down, in two environments, as well as to register the occurrence of termites and beetles in the respective samples and environments. The searched species were, Eucalyptus urophylla S T Blake (Myrtaceae), Melia azedarach L. (Meliaceae), Lophantera lactescens Ducke, (Malpighiaceae), Pinus elliottii Engelm (Pinaceae), Inga marginata Willd (Mimosaceae). The experiment was accomplished in two rotten fields, one inside of a secondary forest and another one a gramineas pasture. We enrolled 56,6% of the sample with the presence of termites in the field within the forest, and the identified species were: Nasutitermes minor (HOMGREN, 1906), Nasutitermes jaraguae (SNYDER, 1924) and Heterotermes longiceps (SNYDER, 1924). In the open field it was registered 20% of the sample the shaft with the presence of termites, with only occurrence of only one species, H. longiceps. Were that one less deteriorated as inside the forest as in the open field: M. azedarach and L. lactescens.
Analysis of the Occurrence of Six Groups of Coleoptera in Two Ecologically Disturbed EcosystemsAbstract. The aim of this study was to analyze the occurrence of six groups of insects (Scolytinae, Platypodinae, Bostrichidae, Cerambycidae, Curculionidae and Nitidulidae) in a pasture area and forest fragment, in order to provide a discussion that fosters the understanding of the occurrence of these insects in function of the assessed ecosystem, generating data that signal the possibility of bioindication in future work with these organisms. The samples were obtained weekly in Ipiabas, a district of Barra do Pirai, RJ, by the installation of eight impact traps, semifunil model, in the study areas, being four traps in the pasture´s area and four in the forest fragment, respecting the distance of 50 meters between them. Samples were collected from May 2012 to May 2013. A total of 4,796 beetles were collected, of which 3,275 (67.9 %) individuals were captured in the forest fragment and 1,521 (32.03%) in the pasture. The subfamily Scolytinae was more frequent in the pasture and during the dry season, while the Nitidulidae family showed higher frequency in the forest fragment and in the rainy season. Among the studied groups, the nitidulídeos had greater variation in occurrence’s patterns, indicating that this family has the potential to be used as an indicator of environmental quality.
