Given the higher burden of risk factors for metabolic syndrome (MetS) on morbidity and mortality, it is critical to prevent the development of metabolic syndrome in the first place. While dietary habits have been favorably associated with some of the factors included in the definition of metabolic syndrome, limited and inconsistent data have been reported on the role of nutrition in the development of metabolic syndrome. Currently, there is no consensus as to which dietary patterns would confer the lowest risk of MetS. Identification of dietary patterns, food groups, or nutrients that may lower the incidence of metabolic syndrome could improve prevention strategies as well as prognosis among subjects with existing MetS. This manuscript reviews current evidence on dietary patterns, consumption of fat, whole grains, carbohydrate quality and quantity, and moderate alcohol consumption as they relate to metabolic syndrome.
There is currently much interest in exploring environmental approaches to combat weight gain and obesity. This study presents process evaluation results from a workplace-based study that tested two levels of environmentally focused weight management interventions in a manufacturing setting. The moderate treatment featured a set of relatively simple, low-cost environmental modifications designed to facilitate healthy eating and physical activity; the intense treatment added elements intended to actively involve and engage management in program efforts. Fidelity varied across the 11 interventions comprising the two treatment conditions but did not vary systematically by treatment condition (moderate vs. intense). Environmental assessments showed improvements in workplace supports for weight management and significant differences by treatment level. Positive shifts in health climate perceptions also occurred, but sites receiving the intense treatment were not perceived as more supportive by employees. Challenges and limitations associated with environmental interventions are discussed with specific reference to activating management support.
Objective
To evaluate the effectiveness of the Fuel Your Life program, an adaptation of the Diabetes Prevention Program, utilizing implementation strategies commonly used in worksite programs – telephone coaching, small group coaching and self-study.
Methods
The primary outcomes of BMI and weight were examined in a randomized control trial conducted with city/county employees.
Results
Although the majority of participants in all three groups lost some weight, the phone group lost significantly more weight (4.9 lbs.), followed by the small groups (3.4 lbs.) and the self-study (2.7 lbs.). Of the total participants, 28.3% of the phone group, 20.6% of the small group and 15.7 of the self-study group lost 5% or more of their body weight.
Conclusions
Fuel Your Life (DPP) can be effectively disseminated using different implementation strategies that are tailored to the workplace.
