The prognostic value of different factors upon diagnosis of CML was analysed in 45 Philadelphia (Ph1)-positive patients. The median survival was 48 months. Univariate analysis showed 5 poor prognostic factors (male sex, under 45 years-old, bone marrow blasts greater than or equal to 10 percent, blood basophils greater than or equal to 6 percent and blood eosinophils greater than or equal to 6 percent) which provided for the development of a clinical staging system: Stage I with none or one factor and a two-year survival rate of 100 percent; Stage II with two or three factors and two-year survival of 72.2 percent; and Stage III with four or five factors and two-year survival of 0 percent (p = 0.00016). Multivariate survival analysis showed that combination of blood basophilia and bone marrow blasts had the strongest predictive relationship to survival time. We conclude that a combination of pretreatment factors identifies different risk subcategories in CML patients and is helpful in assessing the overall prognosis and the treatment approach.
Intravenous glucose tolerance tests (IVGTT) were performed on 9 adults with sickle cell anemia and 15 normal controls. Blood samples were collected before and 1, 3, 5, 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, and 60 min after intravenous glucose infusion and used for glucose and C-peptide assays. The mean C-peptide concentration after glucose infusion was significantly (p < 0.05) lower for the SCA patients as compared to the controls. No significant differences were observed in the glucose concentration of IVGTT between the two groups. These results suggest an inadequate insulin secretion by the endocrine pancreas in sickle cell anemia or an independent genetic abnormality in linkage desequilibrium with the βs gene.
Gymnotus is the most studied genus of the order Gymnotiformes, but the morphological similarities of the different species make it difficult to identify taxa reliably. The present study is a continuation of the ongoing research into the taxonomic diversity of the stocks of Gymnotus sold as live bait in the Pantanal, Brazil. These studies have been based on cytogenetic analyses, DNA barcoding, and the analysis of coloration patterns. The results of the cytogenetic analysis confirmed the presence of three distinct strains, recognized as Gymnotus paraguensis, G. sylvius, and G. pantanal. However, the results revealed that the molecular operational taxonomic units identified as G. paraguensis actually include a relatively diverse set of fish, separated by considerable genetic distances. As the G. paraguensis specimens also presented considerable variation in coloration patterns, further genetic diversity analyses were conducted on these individuals, to test the hypothesis that more than one species is present in this cytotaxonomic unit. The haplotype network revealed a regional pattern in the distribution of this species. The results indicate that the observed variation in coloration patterns is associated with a high degree of phenotypic plasticity in G. paraguensis. These findings emphasize the importance of using an integrative approach for a more accurate diagnosis of Gymnotus, in particular, the species marketed as live bait for the fisheries of the upper Paraguay River basin in the Brazilian Pantanal.
Architectural offices have been using rendered images in their electronic portfolios. What are the characteristics of these images? Is there any prevalent technique? Has a standard presentation already been established? This article presents a research that analyzed the rendered images found on the website of Jacobsen Arquitetura, one of the 25 offices elected in 2010 as the "new generation of Brazilian architecture". This study is part of the authors' research, which aims to identify how Brazilian contemporary architectural offices, which stand out in the architectural field, deal with these issues. The results provide subsidies for reflection on Brazilian architectural field, consequently, on architects and urban planners' education.
Photography is historically used to display architectural works to distant audience. Digital media, mainly the Internet, have expanded the distribution of images, especially through the websites of architecture offices, which found a handy tool for the dissemination of its portfolio. The perception of the resulting image from the photographic registration technique varies depending on the means it is presented, either digital or analogical. This finding led the investigation presented in this article: How architecture design companies present photographic images to promote their work through electronic portfolios? Is there any strategy that prevails? These questions inspired a research that analyses the architectural photographs digitally presented by Brazilian contemporary architecture offices. The goal is to build a diagnosis of the use of photography on their website by identifying recurrent strategies and techniques. This article presents the examination of photographic images displayed in the Jacobsen Architecture office site, which is relevant in the contemporary Brazilian scene. Procedures consisted of bibliographical and documentary researches, followed by analysis. The literature was addressed to the architectural photography. The documentary research explored all the photographs available on the office's website, totalling 418. It was established 25 objective parameters, which were recognized in each image, and the data were tabulated. The operation of the entire universe of data allowed the statistical and comparative analysis. The result identifies the most common practices and the nature of the photographic image from that office.
