The occurrences of positive cases in humans and dogs, the presence of Lutzomyia cruzi and the absence of Lutzomyia longipalpis together with the detection of natural infection with Leishmania (Leishmania) infantum chagasi, indicate that Lutzomyia cruzi participates in visceral leishmaniasis transmission in Jaciara, State of Mato Grosso, Brazil.

No Estado de Mato Grosso, 100% dos municípios apresentam registros de casos autóctones de leishmaniose tegumentar americana. O presente trabalho objetivou verificar a distribuição geográfica de Lutzomyia whitmani no estado. Mato Grosso possui três ecossistemas distintos, o cerrado, o pantanal e área de domínio amazônico. Os dados sobre a ocorrência de Lutzomyia whitmani foram obtidos a partir de relatórios de pesquisa entomológica realizados pelo Núcleo de Entomologia da Fundação Nacional de Saúde no período de 1996 a 2000 e de 2001 a 2006 pelo Laboratório de Entomologia da Secretaria Estadual de Saúde de Mato Grosso. Foram realizadas pesquisas entomológicas em 83 (59,7%) dos 139 municípios de Mato Grosso. Lutzomyia whitmani foi capturado em 70 (84,3%) municípios, com ampla distribuição em todos os tipos de vegetação.

Introduction: The present study compares human landing catches of primary malaria vectors with two alternative methods of capture: the Shannon trap and the Mosquito magnet. Methods: This study used regression models to adjust capture data to a negative binominal distribution. Results: Capture numbers and relative percentages obtained from the three methods vary strongly between species. The highest overall captures were obtained for Anopheles triannulatus with captures for the Shannon trap and the Mosquito magnet measuring more than 330% higher than captures obtained by human landings. For Anopheles darlingi, captures by the Shannon trap and the Mosquito magnet were about 14% and 26% of human landing catches, respectively. Another species with malaria transmission potential that was not sampled by human landing captures weascaptured by the Shannon trap and the Mosquito magnet (Anopheles oswaldoi). Both alternative sampling techniques can predict the human landing of Anopheles triannulatus, but without proportionality. Models for Anopheles darlingi counts, after totaling daily captures, are significant and proportional, but prediction models are more reliable when using the Shannon trap compared with the Mosquito magnet captures. Conclusions: These alternative capture methods can be partially recommended for the substitution of human landing captures or, at least, as complementary forms of monitoring for malarial mosquitoes.

Neste trabalho, relata-se pela primeira vez a ocorrência de Panstrongylus lignarius no Estado de Mato Grosso. Entre 2001 e 2009, cinco espécimes foram capturados pelos moradores dos municípios de Paranaíta, Alta Floresta, Lucas do Rio Verde, Sorriso e Guarantã do Norte e enviados ao Laboratório de Entomologia da Secretaria de Estado de Saúde de Mato Grosso, onde foram identificados como Panstrongylus lignarius (Walker, 1837). O encontro dessa espécie no estado do Mato Grosso, Brasil, amplia a sua distribuição geográfica.
