E-mail: romeiro@dtr.ufrpe.br This study was performed with the aim of to investigate the infestation by the cat fur-mite Lynxacarus radovskyi in cats from Recife Metropolitan Region, State of Pernambuco, Brazil, during the period of May through December of 2003. Hair samples were taken from cats of both sexes and different ages and submitted to microscopical examination. The results showed that 75.84% (254/335) of cats were infested with L. radovskyi, but statistically significant differences were not observed among the presence of mite and sex, race and age. The results indicate that the mite L. radovskyi is endemic in this population.

Abstract:The use of laptops computers is increasing and this model surpassed the desktop computer as the most popular of the personal computer market. On the extended use situations, the laptop can causes ergonomic issues, and the use of an adjustable table is demanded to raise the screen to the user eye-line height in order to alleviate this problem. The manufacturing of the laptop stand causes environmental impact, still requiring the production of other complementary peripherals for the stand to be effective. this paper describes a simplified LCA -Life Cycle Assessment linked to an ESW -Ecodesign Strategy Wheel method application highlighted a great opportunity of innovation during the evaluation of the manufacturing process of the UpTable portable laptop stand, providing solutions for both the ergonomic issue and the environmental sustainability. Proposed manufacturing process eliminates the peripherals redundancy and promotes economy of supplies with no prejudice to the portability that characterizes the device, reducing the environmental impact during the manufacturing process, utilization and discharge of the product.

A esquistossomose, causada pelo trematódeo Schistosoma mansoni no Brasil, assume caráter de doença infecciosa com quadros agudos e crônicos, estando a instalação da doença intimamente ligada à persistência dos focos de transmissão, às precárias condições socioambientais e à presença do vetor Biomphalaria glabrata. Em Pernambuco, embora a doença predomine em áreas rurais, casos em áreas litorâneas vêm sendo registrados, principalmente onde existem problemas de saneamento básico. Objetivou-se com este estudo, avaliar a frequência da infecção por S. mansoni e analisar aspectos socioeconômicos e higiênico-sanitários ligados ao parasitismo em comunidades da Região Metropolitana de Recife -PE. O estudo foi desenvolvido em 14 comunidades nos municípios de Camaragibe, Goiana, Recife e Igarassu, com anuência das Secretárias de Saúde de cada município. Para o diagnóstico da doença, utilizaram-se as técnicas de Kato-katz, sistema Coprotest®, Hoffmann, Faust e Willis. Aplicou-se um questionário para a obtenção de dados epidemiológicos. Obteve-se positividade de 7,3%, sendo as variáveis de associação significativa a cidade e comunidade de residência dos indivíduos, a faixa etária, número de pessoas na residência, tipo de habitação, e, principalmente, aquelas ligadas à obtenção, uso e contato com a água.

In a context where environmental questions have been gaining increasingly importance, for both the present legislation and consumers' requirements, several strategies can be adopted by companies that wish to achieve sustainability. The verification list for the "Design for The Life Cycle" is an approach that provides the qualitative evaluation of improvement opportunities in a certain product, in terms of its eco-efficiency. This paper presents the evaluation of the product "Santa-Cruz" Sundial, produced by a Brazilian games' company. An analysis of multiple aspects of the product was made, these being: sizing, materials, production, usage, maintenance, package, final disposal, among others. This assessment was made by assigning the following classification to each one of these criteria: A-ideal situation (the standard was considered in its overall); B-situation to explore (There are opportunities of improvement); C-Urgent need for action (the standard was never considered or the solution is yet unknown for it).

sociodemográficas de comunidades do Recife, Goiana, Igarassu e Camaragibe -estado de Pernambuco, Brasil. Os indivíduos participantes foram convidados a assinar um termo de Consentimento e Livre Esclarecido. As amostras fecais foram submetidas a exames parasitológicos, utilizando as técnicas de Willis (flutuação simples), Hoffman (sedimentação espontânea), Faust (centrífugo-flutuação), kato-katz, sistema Coproplus e centrífugo-sedimentação em formol éter confeccionando-se três lâminas para cada amostra em cada tipo de exame realizado. No total de amostras fecais analisadas a positividade foi de 15,5%, com frequência de infectados significativamente maior para pessoas com renda até um salário mínimo, detectando-se predominantemente Isospora belli além de Entamoeba spp. e Giardia spp. Conclui-se que a infecção por enteroprotozoários está presente nas comunidades analisadas, associada à renda familiar dos indivíduos e favorecida por condições socioeconômicas desfavoráveis e condições higiênico-sanitárias inadequadas.
