El género Charidotella (Weise, 1896) (Chrysomelidae, Cassidinae), incluye algo más de 100 especies distribuidas desde Canadá hasta el Sur de Argentina. Algunas especies son consideradas plagas agrícolas. Muchas de ellas son sumamente difíciles de distinguir usando caracteres morfológicos. Se evaluó el fragmento correspondiente al código de barras del ADN, del gen citocromo c oxidasa I (COI) en siete especies de Charidotella colectadas en cinco sitios de muestreo de Panamá. Las secuencias se analizaron mediante Neighbor Joining, que produce árboles filogenéticos basados en distancias genéticas. Las especies estudiadas fueron C. ventricosa, C. zona, C. sexpunctata, C. annexa, C. sinuata, C. ambita, C. tumida. La especie más frecuente en los puntos de colecta fue Charidotella sexpunctata y la más cercana a ella según el estudio molecular es C. sinuata. Las especies que se encuentra mayormente distribuida en Panamá es Charidotella sexpunctata.
El complejo de mosca blanca (Hemiptera: Aleyrodidae) incluye algunas de las principales plagas del ejote francés (Phaseolus vulgaris L.). Dentro de las cuales, Bemisia tabaci es vector del virus del mosaico dorado que afecta la calidad y rendimiento del cultivo, con pérdidas hasta del 100% y un control difícil debido a la resistencia adquirida por las plagas hacia algunos agroquímicos. El ejote francés ocupa el segundo lugar entre de los productos no tradicionales de exportación de Guatemala. Su manejo agronómico ha sido principalmente a través del control químico, el cual afecta insectos y otros organismos que no son el objetivo del control, tales como: polinizadores, insectos benéficos, humanos y fauna silvestre. Los objetivos del estudio fueron: determinar la presencia de enemigos naturales nativos de la mosca blanca e identificar las especies de mosca blanca presentes en el cultivo del ejote francés en Chimaltenango. Para el estudio se establecieron cuatro parcelas de 300 m², se realizaron muestreos semanales durante dos ciclos del cultivo. En cada parcela se muestrearon cinco sitios y en cada sitio cinco plantas. Las especies de parasitoides nativos encontrados fueron: Encarsia formosa Gahan, Eretmocerus eremicus Rose y Zolnerowuch y Amitus fuscipennis MacGown y Nebeker, la especie más abundante fue A. fuscipennis. Los depredadores identificados fueron Chrysoperla carnea (Stephens) e Hippodamia convergens Guerin-Meneville. La especie más abundante fue H. convergens. Estas especies podrían ser herramientas valiosas para ser empleadas en programas de control biológico, producciones orgánicas o en programas de manejo integrado de plagas.
Introducción. El gusano barrenador del ganado, Cochliomyia hominivorax (Coquerel), es una plaga de importancia económica para animales de sangre caliente, principalmente el ganado vacuno. Objetivo. Caracterizar molecularmente seis cepas de Cochliomyia hominivorax (Coquerel) y la especie Cochliomyia macellaria, por medio de las secuencias del mtADN. Materiales y métodos. El estudio se realizó durante los años 2006 y 2007, utilizando seis cepas de colonias procedentes de México, Panamá y Costa Rica, ubicadas en el Laboratorio de Biología Molecular del Instituto Smithsonian de Investigaciones Tropicales, Panamá. Se optimizaron tres cebadores de seis que fueron evaluados, por medio del método de secuenciación cíclica. Para establecer las relaciones filogenéticas entre las cepas se realizaron los análisis de Parsimonia, NJ (Neighbor-Joining), Máxima Verosimilitud y Bayesiano. Para C. macellaria se evaluaron tres cebadores que fueron utilizados para C. hominivorax. Resultados. Se obtuvieron las regiones del genoma mitocondrial NADH4–tRNA–NADH5. Todos los análisis mostraron la misma topología formando cuatro clados definidos. El primero formado por las cepas de Oaxaca y Quintana Roo, el segundo por las cepas de Chiapas, el tercero por las cepas de Costa Rica y Panamá y el cuarto por la población de Brasil, obtenida de GenBank. En C. macellaria dos cebadores lograron amplificar la región NADH4 y uno la región NADH5. Conclusión. Las amplificaciones obtenidas en esta investigación aportan información para continuar con los estudios moleculares entre las especies de C. macellaria y C. hominivorax; también para identificar el origen geográfico de las cepas.
Introducción. Trialeurodes vaporariorum (Westwood) es una de las principales plagas del ejote francés (Phaseolus vulgaris L.), leguminosa para consumo en vainas inmaduras, y es vector del virus del mosaico dorado, que afecta la calidad y rendimiento del cultivo, con pérdidas hasta del 100%. Su control es poco efectivo, debido a que muchos productos químicos ya no controlan la plaga. El ejote francés dentro de los productos no tradicionales en Guatemala, ocupa el segundo lugar en la exportación. Asegurar un buen manejo fitosanitario con baja carga química por plaguicidas, son factores importantes para poder exportarlo. Objetivo. La investigación tuvo por objetivo determinar la efectividad de la combinación entre flupyradifurone y Beauveria bassiana para el control de la mosca blanca en el cultivo del ejote francés. Materiales y métodos. El estudio se realizó de febrero a diciembre de 2018 en Parramos, Chimaltenango, Guatemala. Se establecieron siete parcelas de 100 m², correspondientes a cada tratamiento. Se muestrearon moscas blancas semanalmente durante dos ciclos de cultivo, también se colectaron en cada parcela enemigos naturales de estas. Se realizaron tres aplicaciones de cada tratamiento en cada ciclo del cultivo y se muestrearon las plantas divididas en tres estratos (alto, medio, bajo). Resultados. Los tratamientos que presentaron el mejor control de la población de mosca blanca (ninfas y adultos) al realizar la prueba de Tukey (0,05), fueron flupyradifurone (1 l ha-1) + B. bassiana y flupyradifurone (0,75 l ha-1) + B. bassiana. La mayor distribución de las poblaciones de mosca blanca se encontró en los estratos alto y medio. Conclusión. La combinación de flupyradifurone (0,75 l ha-1) con B. bassiana puede ser empleado dentro de un manejo integrado de plagas, y se presenta como una alternativa de control de la mosca blanca, que ha adquirido resistencia a algunos agroquímicos.
Los trips (Insecta:Thysanoptera) son plagas que afectan al ejote francés (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) existen prácticas agronómicas que favorecen el incremento de las poblaciones de insectos, como la fertilización. El objetivo de la investigación fue establecer el efecto de fertilizantes nitrogenados y aminoácidos libres en distintas concentraciones sobre las poblaciones de trips de las especies Frankliniella occidentalis (Pergande) y Trips tabaci (Lindeman), en el cultivo del ejote francés. Se establecieron nueve parcelas, se evaluaron tres concentraciones de un fertilizante nitrogenado (urea 46 %) correspondientes las dosis de 71 kg ha-1, 95 kg ha-1 y 119 kg ha-1; tres concentraciones del abono orgánico compost según las dosis de 3 825 kg ha-1, 5 100 kg ha-1 y 6 375 kg ha-1; también se evaluaron tres concentraciones de aminoácidos libres (0.75 L ha-1, 1 L ha-1 y 1.25 L ha-1). Las variables de respuesta fueron: número de adultos y ninfas por planta y número de adultos y ninfas en cada fase de desarrollo de la planta. Las concentraciones de las dosis recomendada para nitrógeno ureico fue de 95 kg ha-1 y 119 kg ha-1 y aminoácidos libres del 1 L ha-1 y 1.25 L ha-1 tuvieron un efecto positivo sobre las poblaciones de trips en estado de ninfas y adultos (p = < 0.0001), principalmente en la fase de producción del cultivo, lo que indica la importancia del manejo correcto de estos fertilizantes en el cultivo del ejote francés para evitar favorecer el incremento de las poblaciones de trips.
