As the development of the industrial revolution takes place, disruptions are happening constantly in almost every major sector of the current industries. Companies and organizations complained about the competencies of the graduates entering the work force. This matter questions the readiness of the education system in preparing the students for the real world. Problems in education such as the regulations, strict policies and instructions from the government are undermining the role of the teachers to do what they think best for their students. This standardization has harmed the motivation and enthusiasm to learn, especially in English language class. Lack of motivation and English Language competency could harm students’ opportunity in accessing the vast global network of knowledge. Merdeka Belajar and SOLE are the promising alternatives in improving ELT. This article is somewhat a position paper trying to clear one side of a debatable opinion about a hot issue. It aims to persuade the reader that our opinion is valid and defensible. In doing so, we then separate the discussion into several parts regarding the analysis of concepts of Merdeka Belajar and SOLE (Self-Organized Learning Environment) related to ELT and motivation in language learning, as well as innovation in education. HIGHLIGHTS: SOLE (Self-Organized Learning Environment) is a concept developed by Sugata Mitra, and the researchers at the SOLE Centre in Newcastle University. SOLE with its highly influenced Constructivism approach lets the learners to take steer of their learning process gives them the ability to make meaning of the subject on their own. Merdeka Belajar (Freedom to Learn) is a new concept that needs to be tread carefully to direct the discussion objectively.
Most of Indonesian young learners, particularly elementary school students, are lack of vocabulary so that it is hard for them to improve their English skills such as speaking and reading. Mastering vocabulary then plays a very significant role as the basic need to enhance their competence. A novel strategy is needed to improve EFL (English as a Foreign Language) young learners' vocabulary mastery. Therefore, the writer proposes flipped classroom as an alternative strategy to teach vocabulary for young learners. Flipped classroom in this paper is an instructional approach and a type blended learning type reversing the old traditional educational system by delivering instructional contents or materials, frequently conducted by online and done outside of the classroom. This paper is focused more on viewing the general concepts or insights and the techniques of utilizing flipped classroom that a teacher can apply in teaching vocabulary to elementary school students in which this approach, the writer believes, can also improve both learner's motivation and engagement. This paper is written based on some theories and the writer's analysis as well as reflection of the writer's teaching experience in classrooms. The data were collected by doing library research so that he got the data as the reference from books as well as journals regarding the object of the study.
This study aims at investigating students’ perceptions of the use of Padlet in the class of Introduction to Functional Linguistics. The population of this study was a class of 2014 batch student of English Language Education program at Sultan Agung Islamic University (UNISSULA) Semarang with a sample of 28 people. This research is in the form of qualitative descriptive design. The data collection method uses observations and questionnaire. The data is then analyzed using interpretive descriptive analysis. The specific target to be achieved in this study is that by knowing students' perceptions of the use of Padlet, then this result can be used as a reference for the Faculty of Language and Communication Science and other faculties in the UNISSULA environment to improve the performance and quality of service to students especially in the learning and teaching process. In addition, the results of this study can also be a reference for both the Study Program and the Faculty to review the curriculum that has been implemented so far. From the data obtained through questionnaires distributed to 28 students of the English Language Education Study Program at the Faculty of Languages and Communication Science of Sultan Agung Islamic University Semarang in the class of 2014/2015, researchers can conclude that these students have very diverse perceptions in the use of Padlet media in learning Introduction to Functional Linguistics. To be sure, most students really positively appreciate the use of this media in linguistic learning in general.
The objective of this study was to test which one of the two methods (TPR and DM) were more effective to improve the students' vocabulary mastery. The population of this study was all of the fifth graders of SD Islam Sultan Agung 4 Semarang in the academic year of 2015/2016. The instrument of the study was vocabulary test consisted of multiple choice items and matching items. Before treatment was given, pre-test was conducted to both groups. Meanwhile, post-test was conducted after the treatment had finished. The result showed that the mean of the experimental and control group in pre-test were 64.35 and 65.30, respectively. After being given the treatment, post-test was conducted in both groups. The t-test calculation showed that there was a significant difference. So, Total Physical Response method was more effective than Direct Method in learning English Vocabulary to the fifth graders of Elementary Students. AbstrakTujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk menguji mana dari dua metode (TPR dan DM) yang lebih efektif untuk meningkatkan kemampuan penguasaan kosa kata siswa. Subjek penelitiannya adalah semua siswa kelas 5 SD Islam Sultan Agung 4 Semarang Tahun Ajaran 2015/2016. Instrumen penelitiannya berupa tes kosa kata yang terdiri dari pilihan ganda dan menjodohkan. Sebelum perlakuan diberikan, kedua grup diberikan pre-test. Sedangkan post-test diberikan setelah perlakuan selesai. Hasilnya menunjukkan bahwa rata-rata grup eksperimen dan kontrol berturut-turut adalah 64.35 dan 65.30. Setelah diberikan perlakuan, kedua grup diberikan post-test. Nilai rata-rata untuk kedua grup berturut-turut adalah 78.65 dan 71.70. Perhitungan t-test menunjukkan adanya perbedaan yang mencolok. Jadi, metode Total Physical Response lebih efektif daripada Direct Method dalam pembelajaran kosa kata Bahasa Inggris pada siswa kelas lima sekolah dasar.
Vocabulary mastery plays a significant role in mastering any other kinds of English language skills. This study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of using total physical response in improving vocabulary mastery of Indonesian private Islamic junior high school students. The researchers used quasi experimental research design. Population chosen was 129 seventh grade students of an Islamic private junior high school in Indonesia. In collecting data, the researchers used vocabulary test. SPSS system was used to analyze the collected data. The result showed that the Sig. (2-tailed) score was 0.000 (< 0.05). So Ha was accepted meaning that there was a significant difference in the mean score of students' vocabulary test achievement between experimental group and control group. Therefore, it concluded that the use of total physical response was effective to improve Indonesian private Islamic junior high school students' vocabulary mastery.
