We report a case of a horizontal intra-alveolar root fracture between the middle and apical third of the upper right central incisor associated with an extrusive luxation of the coronal fragment, in a 24-year-old male patient. Twenty minutes after being accidentally hit by a metallic device, the patient's coronal portion was repositioned and splinted under local anesthesia. After that, we lost sight of the patient. One year later, the patient showed up. The splint was lost, the tooth showed physiological mobility and responded to pulp testing. Radiographs showed healing of the horizontal fracture and normal periodontal ligament.
Objectives. This work aimed to estimate the knowledge and practice of general dentists in the governorate of Manouba regarding the management of patients at risk of infective endocarditis. Materials and Methods. A survey involving private sector general dentists in the governorate of Manouba was performed. It contained 21 questions, and it was addressed to 111 dentists. Only 82 dentists responded. To carry out the descriptive study, we used the SPSS software version 21.0. Results. Our results proved the lack of knowledge among dentists in the governorate of Manouba with regard to the management of patients at risk of infective endocarditis. An overestimation of the risk and an overprescription of antibiotic were found in order to ensure an over-protection for the patients as well as the dentist. In fact, 85.4% of these dentists prescribed antibiotic prophylaxis for the two groups of patients (high risk and moderate risk). Only 9.8% followed the right modality of antibiotic prophylaxis prescription; 4.9% of the dentists prescribed antibiotic only 1 hour before the act and 4.9% of them prescribed antibiotic 1 hour before the act and continued the treatment in case of the presence of an infectious site. Conclusion. A discrepancy towards an over-estimation of risk and overprescription of antibiotic was found between the recommendations and real practice. Similar studies in the other governorates of Tunisia are recommended in order to better understand the problem.
Introduction:
The emergence of nanotechnology, which has become an important research area in dentistry, has made it possible to obtain nano-structured materials with improved properties compared to their basic form. In this work, we have performed an experimental study on natural teeth to evaluate the microleakage of a Ketac™ Universal nano-filled GIG in box cavities and compare it to a Ketac™ Fil Plus (3M ESPE) conventional GIG.
Materials and Methods:
80 Class II cavities were prepared on the mesial and distal surfaces of forty teeth (twenty molars and twenty premolars). The sample was divided randomly into two groups: Group1 with conditioning and Group 2 without conditioning. The mesial cavities were obturated with Ketac™Universal nano-filled GIG and the distal cavities with Ketac™ Fil Plus GIG. The teeth underwent thermocycling, followed by infiltration with methylene blue. The teeth roots were inserted into methacrylate resin blocks and then sectioned with a chainsaw in the center of both restorations. After observation with a stereomicroscope, the extent of methylene blue infiltration in each restoration was recorded separately for the cervical surface (from 0 to 2) and the axial surface (from 0 to 3).The Chi-squared test with SPSS20.2 software was used to investigate the score distribution.
Results:
Results were considered significant if P<0.05. The Chi-square test showed a significant difference between the nano-filled GIG and the condensable GIG. The nano-filled GIG showed less infiltration, and it was found to be more tight than the conventional GIG.
Conclusion:
The results of the current study suggest that the use of nanotechnology is a promising strategy to improve the clinical performance of GIG. However, this study is limited to an experimental in vitro strategy, which cannot reliably reproduce clinical reality.
