1 はじめに 普段の生活ではあまり意識されないかもしれないが、注 意して我々の身の回りを見てみると、自動車、工場、パソ コン等から、膨大な廃熱が利用されずに棄てられているこ とに気が付く。米国ローレンス・リバモア国立研究所がまと めた 2016 年の推定によると、 米国において、 一次エネルギー の中で有効活用されているのはわずか 30.8 % であり、実 に 66.4 % が活用されずに棄てられている [1] 。エネルギーの 最終形態は熱であるので、すなわち、このほとんどが未利 用熱である。日本には少し古い推定しかないが、状況は米 国と類似しており、1998 年において、未利用熱は一次エネ ルギーの 66 % に達している [2] 。エネルギー白書を見てみ ると、1998 年における日本国内の一次エネルギーの供給 量は 18 × 10 18 J であるので [3] 、未利用熱は 12 × 10 18 J と 膨大な量になる。人類はエネルギーを有効活用できていな い。我々が直面しているさまざまなエネルギー・環境問題 を解決するための一つの戦略がこの未利用熱の有効活用 であり、その実現の鍵を握る技術がこの論文で取り扱う熱 電発電 用語 1 である。熱電発電を用いることで、膨大な未利 用熱を利用価値の高い電気エネルギーとして活用できる。 一般には聞きなれない熱電発電という技術は、これまで 宇宙開発の中で使用されて発展してきた。1950 年代の宇 宙開発の黎明期から現在に至るまで、熱電発電は太陽光 の届かない領域を探索する宇宙船等で、放射性同位体の 崩壊熱を熱源とした重要な電源として用いられている [4] 。 失敗の許されない宇宙開発において長年使用されてきたと いう事実は、熱電発電が高い信頼性を有する技術であるこ とを証明している。近年、この熱電発電を、エネルギー・ 環境問題が深刻化する中で、民生分野でも利用しようとす る試みが本格化している。例えば、12 % の発電効率を示 太田 道広 熱電発電が抱える二つの課題である、 低い変換効率と毒性・希少元素の含有を解決するために、国内外の研究機関と共同して、 前者 についてはナノテクノロジーを、 後者は元素代替を用いて解決を試みている。脚光の当たりやすい材料開発のみならず、 泥臭いモジュー ル開発等にも精力的に取り組み、熱電発電の高効率化、 低毒性化、 低コスト化に道筋をつけた。 さらに、熱電発電の市場開拓に積極的 に関与するために、 これら研究成果をもとにベンチャー企業を設立した。 この論文では、基礎研究から起業までの各ターニングポイント で、著者がとった研究戦略について議論する。 熱電発電の実用化に向けた高効率化と毒性・希少元素代替 − 未利用熱エネルギーの革新的活用に向けて − Michihiro OHTA We have successfully realized greater thermoelectric performance through nanotechnology and developed alternative materials that are more abundant and less toxic than the conventional materials. These studies were conducted in collaboration with domestic and overseas research institutions. A comprehensive effort to all aspects of thermoelectrics, i.e. from materials to module, has realized high-performance and environmentally friendly technologies. A startup company was founded in order to develop the thermoelectric market for these technologies. Recent findings about ultrahigh thermoelectric performance in SnSe single crystals have stimulated related research on this simple binary compound, which is focused mostly on its polycrystalline counterparts, and particularly on electrical property enhancement by effective doping. This work systematically investigated the thermoelectric properties of polycrystalline SnSe doped with three alkali metals (Li, Na, and K). It is found that Na has the best doping efficiency, leading to an increase in hole concentration from 3.2 × 10(17) to 4.4 × 10(19) cm(-3) at room temperature, accompanied by a drop in Seebeck coefficient from 480 to 142 μV/K. An equivalent single parabolic band model was found adequate to capture the variation tendency of Seebeck coefficient with doping levels within a wide range. A mixed scattering of carriers by acoustic phonons and grain boundaries is suitable for numerically understanding the temperature-dependence of carrier mobility. A maximum ZT of ∼0.8 was achieved in 1% Na- or K-doped SnSe at 800 K. Possible strategies to improve the mobility and ZT of polycrystals were also proposed.

The interaction of melanocortin-4 (MC4R) and melanocortin-3 (MC3R) receptors with proopiomelanocortin (POMC)-derived peptides (e.g. α-MSH), agouti-related protein (AgRP) and melanocortin-2 receptor accessory protein 2 (MRAP2) is suggested to play critical roles in energy balance of vertebrates. However, evidence on their interaction in birds remains scarce. Our study aims to reveal their interaction in chickens and the results showed that (1) chicken (c-)MC3R and cMC4R expressed in Chinese hamster ovary (CHO) cells can be activated by α-MSH and ACTH equipotently, monitored by a pGL3-CRE-luciferase reporter system; (2) cMC3R and cMC4R, when co-expressed with cMRAP2 (or cMRAP, a cMRAP2 homolog), show increased sensitivity to ACTH treatment and thus likely act as ACTH-preferring receptors, and the interaction between cMC3R/cMC4R and cMRAP2 was demonstrated by co-immunoprecipitation assay; (3) both cMC3R and cMC4R display constitutive activity when expressed in CHO cells, as monitored by dual-luciferase reporter assay, and cMRAP2 (and cMRAP) can modulate their constitutive activity; (4) AgRP inhibits the constitutive activity of cMC3R/cMC4R, and it also antagonizes ACTH/α-MSH action on cMC4R/cMC3R, indicating that AgRP functions as the inverse agonist and antagonist for both receptors. These findings, together with the co-expression of ,, , and in chicken hypothalamus detected by quantitative real-time PCR, suggest that within the hypothalamus, α-MSH/ACTH, AgRP and MRAP2 may interact at the MC4R(/MC3R) interface to control energy balance. Furthermore, our data provide novel proof for the involvement of MRAP2 (and MRAP) in fine-tuning the constitutive activity and ligand sensitivity and selectivity of both MC3R and MC4R in vertebrates.

Cu 3 SbSe 4 -based compounds composed of earth-abundant elements have been found to exhibit good thermoelectric performance at medium temperatures. High zT values were achieved in previous studies, but further insight into the transport mechanism as well as some key material parameters is still needed. In this work, we studied the electrical and thermal transport properties of Sn-doped Cu 3 SbSe 4 between 300 K and 673 K. It was found that the single parabolic band model explains the electrical transport very well.Experimentally, we determined the band gap to be around 0.29 eV. The density-of-state effective mass was found to be about 1.5 m e for the doped samples. The transport properties suggested degeneracy splitting near the valence band maximum that was not captured by previous band structure calculations.The maximum zT $ 0.70 was obtained at 673 K, and the optimized carrier density was $1.8 Â 10 20 cm À3, and the potential for further improvement of zT via material engineering is briefly discussed.
