NUTRIENT INPUT FROM LITTER FRACTIONS IN A ECOLOGICAL SUCESSION OF AN ATLANTIC FOREST ECOSYSTEM Abstract The aim of this work was to evaluate part of the nutrient cycling dynamics in a “Floresta Ombrófila Densa das Terras Baixas” (Tropical Atlantic Forest), placed in Paranaguá, PR, Brazil. Three plots were choosed, representing the different phases of the forest regeneration: initial (18-years-old), intermediary (31-years-old), and advanced (56-years-old). The contribution of the main tree species in the releasing of nutrients to the ecosystem was evaluated from the analisys of foliar and litterfall nutrient composition. The concentration of some nutrients in litterfall showed variations during the weather seasons, being more clear for Na and K. A phase effect was also observed and was represented by an increase of N and K concentrations, due specially to the morphological characteristics of leaves, and also to the local conditions – higher humidity and thicker organic soil horizon, and a decrease of Al and Na concentrations in litterfall with the developing of the forest regeneration phases.
Large wood (re)introduction can deliver multiple benefits in river restoration, but there is a dearth of the detailed and longer-term post-project monitoring and evaluation required for improving best practice. We present findings from an academic partnership approach to post-project evaluation, based on successive MSc research projects on restored large wood in the Loddon catchment, UK. Field and modelling data reveal: (i) key differences in large wood features between restored and natural reaches; (ii) increased hydraulic retention and changes to mesohabitats associated with large wood; (iii) differences in macroinvertebrate community composition around large wood but a lack of site-level effects; (iv) interactions between macrophytes and large wood that may be specific to restored reaches; (v) a need for further field and modelling studies to inform the accurate representation of large wood in hydraulic models. Some key challenges in partnership working are identified to aid planning and effectiveness of future collaborations.
The present study was carried out in the Floresta Ombrófila Densa on the low lands, in the State of Paraná. The plots were installed in three successional stages: initial, intermediary and advanced. The aim of this work was to evaluate the immediate contribution of leaf litter of selected tree species and other litter fractions on nutrient release to soil, through leaching. For litterfall collection, 10 collectors were installed per successional stage. Litterfall collected during one year, was leached by pulverization of deionized water and the concentration of K, Ca, Mg and Na analyzed. The results showed differences for nutrient released from litterfall in the course of the seasons, suggesting that climatic conditions affected the quality of the litter leached. The behavior of the successional stages was distinct and the highest nutrient release from the leaves occurred in the advanced stage. The highest nutrient release, in total litterfall, occurred in the initial stage. The sequence of nutrient release was the follow: K > Mg > Na > Ca. Differences in the nutrient releasing from litter fractions were observed. The sequence was miscellaneous > twigs and fruits > leaves. Keywords: Litterfall; forest nutrition; tropical forest.
