More than skin deep: In spite of their identical 1:1 surface composition, the geometric and electronic structures of a multilayer and monolayer PdZn surface alloy are different, as are their catalytic selectivities. The CO2 selective multilayer alloy features surface ensembles of PdZn exhibiting a “Zn‐up/Pd‐down” corrugation (see picture). These act as “bifunctional” active sites both for water activation and for the conversion of methanol into CO2. On the monolayer alloy CO and not CO2 is produced.

Discussed are the recent experimental and theoretical results on palladium-based catalysts for selective hydrogenation of alkynes obtained by a number of collaborating groups in a joint multi-method and multi-material approach. The critical modification of catalytically active Pd surfaces by incorporation of foreign species X into the sub-surface of Pd metal was observed by in situ spectroscopy for X=H, C under hydrogenation conditions. Under certain conditions (low H2 partial pressure) alkyne fragmentation leads to formation of a PdC surface phase in the reactant gas feed. The insertion of C as a modifier species in the sub-surface increases considerably the selectivity of alkyne semi-hydrogenation over Pd-based catalysts through the decoupling of bulk hydrogen from the outmost active surface layer. DFT calculations confirm that PdC hinders the diffusion of hydridic hydrogen. Its formation is dependent on the chemical potential of carbon (reactant partial pressure) and is suppressed when the hydrogen/alkyne pressure ratio is high, which leads to rather unselective hydrogenation over in situ formed bulk PdH. The beneficial effect of the modifier species X on the selectivity, however, is also present in intermetallic compounds with X=Ga. As a great advantage, such PdxGay catalysts show extended stability under in situ conditions. Metallurgical, clean samples were used to determine the intrinsic catalytic properties of PdGa and Pd3Ga7. For high performance catalysts, supported nanostructured intermetallic compounds are more preferable and partial reduction of Ga2O3, upon heating of Pd/Ga2O3 in hydrogen, was shown to lead to formation of PdGa intermetallic compounds at moderate temperatures. In this way, Pd5Ga2 and Pd2Ga are accessible in the form of supported nanoparticles, in thin film models, and realistic powder samples, respectively

The oxygen exchange activity of mixed conducting oxide surfaces has been widely investigated, but a detailed understanding of the corresponding reaction mechanisms and the rate-limiting steps is largely still missing. Combined in situ investigation of electrochemically polarized model electrode surfaces under realistic temperature and pressure conditions by near-ambient pressure (NAP) XPS and impedance spectroscopy enables very surface-sensitive chemical analysis and may detect species that are involved in the rate-limiting step. In the present study, acceptor-doped perovskite-type La0.6Sr0.4CoO3-δ (LSC), La0.6Sr0.4FeO3-δ (LSF), and SrTi0.7Fe0.3O3-δ (STF) thin film model electrodes were investigated under well-defined electrochemical polarization as cathodes in oxidizing (O2) and as anodes in reducing (H2/H2O) atmospheres. In oxidizing atmosphere all materials exhibit additional surface species of strontium and oxygen. The polaron-type electronic conduction mechanism of LSF and STF and the metal-like mechanism of LSC are reflected by distinct differences in the valence band spectra. Switching between oxidizing and reducing atmosphere as well as electrochemical polarization cause reversible shifts in the measured binding energy. This can be correlated to a Fermi level shift due to variations in the chemical potential of oxygen. Changes of oxidation states were detected on Fe, which appears as FeIII in oxidizing atmosphere and as mixed FeII/III in H2/H2O. Cathodic polarization in reducing atmosphere leads to the reversible formation of a catalytically active Fe0 phase.

In situ FT-IR spectroscopy was exploited to study the adsorption of CO2 and CO on commercially available yttria-stabilized ZrO2 (8 mol % Y, YSZ-8), Y2O3, and ZrO2. All three oxides were pretreated at high temperatures (1173 K) in air, which leads to effective dehydroxylation of pure ZrO2. Both Y2O3 and YSZ-8 show a much higher reactivity toward CO and CO2 adsorption than ZrO2 because of more facile rehydroxylation of Y-containing phases. Several different carbonate species have been observed following CO2 adsorption on Y2O3 and YSZ-8, which are much more strongly bound on the former, due to formation of higher-coordinated polydentate carbonate species upon annealing. As the crucial factor governing the formation of carbonates, the presence of reactive (basic) surface hydroxyl groups on Y-centers was identified. Therefore, chemisorption of CO2 most likely includes insertion of the CO2 molecule into a reactive surface hydroxyl group and the subsequent formation of a bicarbonate species. Formate formation following CO adsorption has been observed on all three oxides but is less pronounced on ZrO2 due to effective dehydroxylation of the surface during high-temperature treatment. The latter generally causes suppression of the surface reactivity of ZrO2 samples regarding reactions involving CO or CO2 as reaction intermediates.

The oxidation of the Pd(111) surface was studied by in situ XPS during heating and cooling in 0.4 mbar O 2 . The in situ XPS data were complemented by ex situ TPD results. A number of oxygen species and oxidation states of palladium were observed in situ and ex situ. At 430 K, the Pd(111) surface was covered by a 2D oxide and by a supersaturated O ads layer. The supersaturated O ads layer transforms into the Pd 5 O 4 phase upon heating and disappears completely at approximately 470 K. Simultaneously, small clusters of PdO, PdO seeds, are formed. Above 655 K, the bulk PdO phase appears and this phase decomposes completely at 815 K. Decomposition of the bulk oxide is followed by oxygen dissolution in the near-surface region and in the bulk. The oxygen species dissolved in the bulk is more favoured at high temperatures because oxygen cannot accumulate in the near-surface region and diffusion shifts the equilibrium towards the bulk species. The saturation of the bulk "reservoir" with oxygen leads to increasing the uptake of the near-surface region species. Surprisingly, the bulk PdO phase does not form during cooling in 0.4 mbar O 2 , but the Pd 5 O 4 phase appears below 745 K. This is proposed to be due to a kinetic limitation of PdO formation because at high temperature the rate of PdO seed formation is compatible with the rate of decomposition.

The adsorption, bonding, defect formation, and reactivity of hydrogen on different In 2 O 3 powder samples were studied by a combination of volumetric adsorption, thermal desorption, diffraction, and spectroscopic techniques. Surface reduction was observed in dry hydrogen up to 400 K, followed by reduction of surfacenear regions. Above 500 K bulk reduction, along with the formation of metallic In, sets in. Raman spectra indicate a considerable reordering of the In 2 O 3 structure in this temperature regime. Despite their TPD proven presence, the related adsorbed H-containing species were not detectable by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and/or Raman spectroscopy, in strong contrast to related experiments on -Ga 2 O 3 . Hydrogeninduced oxygen vacancies were found to be easily replenished by traces of water in the gas feed.

The oxidation of the Pd(111) surface was studied by in situ XPS during heating and cooling in 3×10 The surface was completely covered with the 2D oxide between 600 K and 655 K. Depth profiling by photon energy variation confirmed the surface nature of the 2D oxide. The 2D oxide decomposed completely above 717 K. Diffusion of oxygen in the palladium bulk occurred at these temperatures. A substantial oxygen signal assigned to the dissolved species was detected even at 923 K. The dissolved oxygen was characterised by the O 1s core level peak at 528.98 eV. The "bulk" nature of the dissolved oxygen species was verified by depth profiling. During cooling in 3×10 -3 mbar O 2 , the oxidised Pd 2+ species appeared at 788 K whereas the 2D oxide decomposed at 717 K during heating. The surface oxidised states exhibited an inverse hysteresis. The oxidised palladium state observed during cooling was assigned to a new oxide phase, probably the ( 67 67 × )R12.2° structure.
