The effects of abiotic stresses cause negative reduction of the productivity in the sugarcane industry. In order to identify indicators of stresses tolerance, two physiological variables were evaluated, nitrate reductase activity and chlorophyll contents in young plants of sugarcane, cv. IAC91-5155. The simultaneous effect of abiotic stresses of high occurrence in Brazilian soils are, water deficiency and aluminum toxicity. The plants were submitted to three treatments of water availability (% field capacity, FC): no stress (70% FC), moderate stress (55% FC), and extreme stress (40% FC); and three acidity treatments in the soil (base saturation, V%): no acidity

The study aimed at differentiating cultivars of sugar cane in irrigated and rainfed environments through morphological and physiological variables, and their responses concerning productivity. The experiment was carried out in Jaú-SP using the RB867515 and RB855536 cultivars. The morphological variables were as follows: length of stems, number of tillers, specific leaf mass (SLM) and leaf area index (LAI), and physiological variables: photochemical efficiency of photosystem II (Fv/Fm), stomatal conductance (gs), relative water content (RWC), SPAD index and chlorophyll content (CC a+b). The evaluations were performed at 60, 120, 180, 240 days after cutting (DAC) in the third cycle, and at the last evaluation, stem (TCH) and sugar (TPH) yield were obtained. The results showed that the RB855536 cultivar has higher values of morphological variables, i.e., length of stems and number of tiller, and of physiological variables, i. e., stomatal conductance and chlorophyll content. Also, it had higher sugar yield under appropriate water regime during the development cycle. The RB867515 cultivar produced more stems and sugar under the rainfed water regime, and higher values of morphological variables such as number of tillers and specific leaf mass, and of physiological variables such as chlorophyll fluorescence (Fv/Fm), stomatal conductance, chlorophyll content and relative water content in the leaf. Soil hydric availability and nitrogen fertilization are important environmental factors that influence sugarcane production. In the present study, the physiological attributes SPAD index, maximum photochemical efficiency of photosystem II (F v /F m), leaf area index (LAI), chlorophyll and carotenoid content, and sugarcane productivity were assessed under different nitrogen doses (0, 50, 100, 150, and 200 kg N ha ¡1) applied in the form of urea via subsurface drip fertigation. The physiological attributes were determined 38, 121, 208, 291, and 381 days after the third harvest (DAH), and stalk and sugar productivity at 381 DAH. The 100 kg N ha ¡1 dose has produced better results for the sugarcane physiological attributes. Increasing doses of nitrogen applied via subsurface drip fertigation increased the productivity of stalks and sugar considerably.
