Em 1899, a inovação na poesia brasileira era representada pelo movimento simbolista, cujo principal expoente, Cruz e Sousa, morrera no ano anterior. Sem o seu líder, os simbolistas perderam força e se fecharam em suas torres de marfim. Os parnasianos, por outro lado, continuaram gozando do respeito do público e do apoio dos críticos dos jornais. Estes, aliás, divulgavam constantemente com destaque a poesia de Olavo Bilac, Alberto de Oliveira, Luís Murat e Raimundo Correia, entre outros parnasianos. Para compreender bem o curioso fenômeno da pequena repercussão do Simbolismo no Brasil, pode-se investigar como alguns livros foram recebidos pela imprensa diária: Evocações, de Cruz e Sousa, Cruz e Sousa, de Nestor Vítor, Setenário das dores de Nossa Senhora e Câmara ardente, de Alphonsus de Guimaraens e Terra dolorosa, de Oliveira Gomes. Como a primeira fase de um levantamento mais extenso, as coleções de Cidade do Rio, Gazeta de Notícias e A Notícia foram examinadas em busca de notícias, crônicas e resenhas críticas dos referidos livros.
Baseia-se este artigo no levantamento de notícias, resenhas e artigos publicados na imprensa carioca, nos anos de 1890 a 1893 e de 1898 a 1899, a respeito de Cruz e Sousa e sua obra literária. Pretende-se abordar especificamente: 1) alguns dos prováveis critérios de organização de Evocações, obra póstuma trazida à luz por esforços de Nestor Vítor e outros admiradores do chamado Dante Negro, 2) as circunstâncias peculiares em que foi produzida e distribuída para o público e 3) as primeiras manifestações críticas publicadas em periódicos. Este artigo almeja também examinar a hipótese de que as mencionadas circunstâncias teriam afetado singularmente a recepção inicial desse livro simbolista.

Ocorreu em Portugal de 1890 a 1893 um intenso movimento literário sob o influxo da estética decadentista-simbolista que emanava da França desde a década anterior. Pode-se afirmar que redatores e colaboradores brasileiros de jornais e revistas cariocas manifestaram pouco interesse pelo decadentismo-simbolismo português. Porém, deram uma contribuição fundamental para a difusão no Brasil das ideias decadentistas-simbolistas, correspondentes estrangeiros como Xavier de Carvalho e Pinheiro Chagas, do diário O País, Fialho de Almeida, do Jornal do Brasil, e Maria Amália Vaz de Carvalho e Jaime de Séguier, do Jornal do Comércio. Pretende-se neste artigo, de maneira sintética, elencar os autores e obras divulgados por esses jornalistas/escritores e precisar a forma pela qual o decadentismo-simbolismo começou a ser divulgado no país de Cruz e Sousa.
