The development and validation of a test battery for detecting and monitoring everyday memory problems

Abstract: This paper describes the Rivermead Behavioural Memory Test (RMBT)-a short test of everyday memory problems with four parallel forms. It was administered to 118 control subjects aged between 16-69 years with a mean IQ of 106 (range 68-136). The limit of normal performance was established on this group and cut-off points were determined for individual components of the test. The test was also given to 176 brain-damaged people and its validity assessed both by correlating RMBT scores to performance on existing te… Show more

“…The RBMT test developers stated that "the RBMT may not be suitable for picking up very mild impairments-indeed the test was not designed for this purpose." 13 We thus were using a rather blunt instrument to measure memory impairment; however, despite this, it is striking that approximately four of five patients assessed for liver transplantation were below the normal range on a test designed to identify everyday memory problems. Coupled with the observation of marked psychomotor slowing, it suggests that the cognitive status of candidates for liver transplantation may be more frequently and severely impaired than generally realized.…”

“…We therefore elected to assess memory using the Rivermead Behavioural Memory Test (RBMT). 13 This test was developed specifically as an ecologically valid measure, i.e., one that would detect memory impairment that would have a significant impact on day-to-day functioning. Furthermore, the RBMT has four matched parallel versions to allow for repeated assessment over time.…”

“…The patients were evaluated on the Rivermead Behavioural Memory Test (RBMT; Wilson, Cockburn, Baddeley, & Hiorns, 1989) which is a test battery for detecting and monitoring everyday memory problems. The mean screen total was 8.55 (range 7-12), which indicates a memory impairment.…”
