A decision support tool for planning module installation in industrial construction

Abstract: PurposeProperly planned module installation on an industrial site is a critical factor in delivering a project safely, on time and within budget. Different sizes of heavy-duty mobile cranes are used to pick, swing and place the modules. Crane selection depends on module size and weight, as well as crane availability, location and configuration. Weeks can be spent in trial and error to prepare and improve module installation plans due to the large number of ways to install the modules on site, high crane operat… Show more

“…This shows that prefabricated building has a shorter construction period than traditional construction methods; tasks at the assembly site are simple, but there are extra parts manufacturing and transportation processes. Therefore, prefabricated buildings have something in common with the manufacturing industry and the traditional construction industry, and supply chain is both similar with and different from the two industries [13]. In this study, a comparison was made among supply chains of prefabricated building, manufacturing and of traditional building for analysis, as shown in Table 1.…”

“…Nevertheless, challenges and uncertainties remain in modular construction site planning, especially in multiple heavy crane lifts (Zheng et al , 2020). In general, crane-lift engages four major elements: cranes, materials to be installed, storage and loading place, and the unloading point (Farajmandi et al , 2020). Compared with conventional construction, MiC integrates most of the fragmented site-built materials or different types of precast and steel elements into the factory-fabricated hefty modules (Yang et al , 2021; Zheng et al , 2020), which triggers differences in crane-lift for conventional practices and high-rise MiC.…”
