“…There is evidence of only little nesting of different draping regions for VEGA 1 (Riedler et al, 1986), compared to what has been seen during the Giotto flyby (Raeder et al, 1987). Near closest approach before the saturation, during intervals 4, 5 and 6, there is a good draping fit.…”

“…The boundary separating the fast solar wind plasma from the slower cometary plasma was found to be much more diffuse during the Giotto encounter Amata et al, 1987). Also near this location, the Giotto magnetometer observed a sudden jump in the magnetic field of « 20 nT (Neubauer, 1986(Neubauer, , 1987, whereas the magnetic field variations detected by the VEGA spacecraft were rather smooth (Riedler et al, 1986). In an effort to explain these discrepancies, Galeev et al (1988) have noted that during the VEGA encounter, the magnetic field was parallel to the relative motion of the two plasma components, giving rise to the firehose instability, which would rapidly decelerate the solar wind plasma.…”

“…These phenomena have been well studied during the flybys of other comets in the last century (see e.g. Smith et al, 1986;Riedler et al, 1986;McComas et al, 1987;Raeder et al, 1987;Delva et al, 2014).…”
