A região Norte do Brasil é considerada zona endêmica de diversas doenças infectocontagiosas, das quais podemos citar a meningite. A doença possui diversos fatores causais, sendo que a etiologia viral é a mais comum, porém a de origem bacteriana apresenta-se como responsável pela maior taxa de mortalidade. Entretanto, apesar da sua relevância no contexto de saúde pública na região Norte do país, poucos são os estudos publicados sobre a meningite na região. Nesse sentido, foi realizado um estudo transversal com o objetivo de traçar o perfil dos indivíduos acometidos por essa doença no Norte do Brasil entre os anos de 2012 e 2015. Os dados foram obtidos no banco de dados oficial do Sistema de Informação de Agravos de Notificação (SINAN). No período de estudo, ocorreu queda no número de casos notificados, houve predominância do sexo masculino, da faixa etária entre 0 e 19 anos e de etiologia bacteriana. Este trabalho, associado a estimativas globais, pode fornecer subsídios para ações de prevenção e controle da meningite na região Norte. Palavras-chave: Meningite; Região Norte; Brasil; Epidemiologia. ABSTRACT Northern region of Brazil is considered an endemic area of several infectious diseases, such as meningitis. The disease has several causal factors, and the viral etiology is the most common, but the bacterial origin is responsible for the highest mortality rate. However, despite its relevance in the context of public health in the northern region of the country, there are a few published studies on meningitis in the region. So, a cross-sectional study was carried out with the objective of tracing the profile of the individuals affected by this disease in Northern Brazil between the years of 2012 and 2015. Data were collected from the official database of the notification of injury information system. During the study period, there was a decrease in the number of cases reported, there was a predominance of males, ages ranging from 0 to 19 years and bacterial etiology. This work, combined with global estimates, can provide subsidies for prevention and control of meningitis in the North. Keywords: Meningitis; Northern Brazil; Epidemiology.

The order Diptera is constituted of insects that possess numerous varieties of habitats, these winged, commonly called mosquitoes, comprise a monophyletic group. Malaria transmitters in Brazil are represented by mosquitoes of the Anopheles genus, being it principal vector species Anopheles (Nyssorhynchus) darlingi Root. Collectings were accomplished in the rural area of Cuiabá in the region of Coxipó do Ouro/MT, and a total 4,773 adult mosquitoes of the genus Anopheles were obtained. The prevailing species in the collectings where An. (Nys.) darlingi with 3,905 (81.8%), considered the vector of major epidemiological expression in the region, followed by Anopheles (Nyssorhynchus) argyritarsis (Robineau-Desvoidy) 267 (5.6%) and Anopheles (Nyssorhynchus) triannulatus (Neiva & Pinto) 226 (4.7%). This report might be useful to entomological surveillance, demonstrating that the Coxipó do Ouro/MT locality might be elected as an area to be monitored, once the presence of such vector in this type of environment indicates a potential malaria transmission risk for the neighbouring regions in the state of Mato Grosso.

People living in mining regions are exposed to numerous biological agents by several specific types of transmission mechanisms. This study is designed to describe fatal hantavirus pulmonary syndrome (HPS) cases confirmed by serology and molecular analysis, where a seroprevalence survey was conducted in the gold mining regions of the state of Mato Grosso, in the official Amazon region, Brazil. Two fatal cases of HPS were confirmed in a mining area in the Legal Amazon, where malaria is one of the most important public health problems. A molecular analysis detected the presence of the genome of the Castelo dos Sonhos virus. Out of the 112 blood samples analyzed, five were positive for Plasmodium infection (four P. falciparum and one P. vivax), and four were seropositive for hantavirus, showing a seroprevalence of 3.57%. One of the four miners who was seroreactive for hantavirus concomitantly had P. falciparum infection, which was confirmed by thick blood smear. This manuscript highlights the importance of considering hantavirus pulmonary syndrome as a diagnostic possibility in febrile infection associated with pulmonary manifestations in mining areas where malaria cases are often identified.
