IMPORTANCE Establishment of the infant microbiome has lifelong implications on health and immunity. Gut microbiota of breastfed compared with nonbreastfed individuals differ during infancy as well as into adulthood. Breast milk contains a diverse population of bacteria, but little is known about the vertical transfer of bacteria from mother to infant by breastfeeding. OBJECTIVE To determine the association between the maternal breast milk and areolar skin and infant gut bacterial communities. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS In a prospective, longitudinal study, bacterial composition was identified with sequencing of the 16S ribosomal RNA gene in breast milk, areolar skin, and infant stool samples of 107 healthy mother-infant pairs. The study was conducted in
Biochemical combinatorial techniques such as phage display, RNA display and oligonucleotide aptamers have proven to be reliable methods for generation of ligands to protein targets. Adapting these techniques to small synthetic molecules has been a long-sought goal. We report the synthesis and interrogation of an 800-million-member DNA-encoded library in which small molecules are covalently attached to an encoding oligonucleotide. The library was assembled by a combination of chemical and enzymatic synthesis, and interrogated by affinity selection. We describe methods for the selection and deconvolution of the chemical display library, and the discovery of inhibitors for two enzymes: Aurora A kinase and p38 MAP kinase.
Colloidal particles may be considered as building blocks for materials, just like atoms are the bricks of molecules, macromolecules, and crystals. Periodic arrays of colloids (colloidal crystals) have attracted much interest over the last two decades, largely because of their unique photonic properties. The archetype opal structures are based on close-packed arrays of spheres of submicrometer diameter. Interest in structuring materials at this length scale, but with more complex features and ideally by self-assembly processes, has led to much progress in controlling features of both building blocks and assemblies. The necessary ingredients include colloids, colloidal clusters, and colloidal "molecules" which have special shapes and the ability to bind directionally, the control over short-range and long-range interactions, and the capability to place and orientate these bricks. This Review highlights recent experimental and theoretical progress in the assembly of colloids larger than 50 nm.
Inverse opals or three-dimensionally ordered macroporous (3DOM) materials, prepared by colloidal crystal templating (CCT) methods, possess distinctive structural features that are important for the design of photonic crystals, sensors, power sources, catalysts, and various other applications. In the past decade, vast progress has been made in shaping these materials at various length scales. It is now possible to prepare 3DOM materials in a variety of simple and complex compositions, in which pore sizes, pore shapes, and skeletal geometries can be adjusted statically and sometimes even dynamically to alter the physical properties of the material. Hierarchical pore structures can be achieved by combining CCT with additional templating techniques. Furthermore, shaped porous nanoparticles may be synthesized using CCT methods. This review will highlight recent advances in controlling both the internal structure of inverse opals and their external morphology, enhancing compositional complexity, endowing these solids with functionality, and incorporating them in integrated functional systems.
This paper addresses reliable and accurate indoor localization using inertial sensors commonly found on commodity smartphones. We believe indoor positioning is an important primitive that can enable many ubiquitous computing applications. To tackle the challenges of drifting in estimation, sensitivity to phone position, as well as variability in user walking profiles, we have developed algorithms for reliable detection of steps and heading directions, and accurate estimation and personalization of step length. We've built an end-to-end localization system integrating these modules and an indoor floor map, without the need for infrastructure assistance. We demonstrated for the first time a meterlevel indoor positioning system that is infrastructure free, phone position independent, user adaptive, and easy to deploy. We have conducted extensive experiments on users with smartphone devices, with over 50 subjects walking over an aggregate distance of over 40 kilometers. Evaluation results showed our system can achieve a mean accuracy of 1.5m for the in-hand case and 2m for the in-pocket case in a 31m×15m testing area.
Propensity score methods are being increasingly used as a less parametric alternative to traditional regression to balance observed differences across groups in both descriptive and causal comparisons. Data collected in many disciplines often have analytically relevant multilevel or clustered structure. The propensity score, however, was developed and has been used primarily with unstructured data. We present and compare several propensity-score-weighted estimators for clustered data, including marginal, cluster-weighted and doubly-robust estimators. Using both analytical derivations and Monte Carlo simulations, we illustrate bias arising when the usual assumptions of propensity score analysis do not hold for multilevel data. We show that exploiting the multilevel structure, either parametrically or nonparametrically, in at least one stage of the propensity score analysis can greatly reduce these biases. These methods are applied to a study of racial disparities in breast cancer screening among beneficiaries in Medicare health plans.
Voltage control of magnetism (VCM) is attracting increasing interest and exciting significant research activity driven by its profound physics and enormous potential for application. This review article aims to provide a comprehensive review of recent progress in VCM in different thin films. We first present a brief summary of the modulation of magnetism by electric fields and describe its discovery, development, classification, mechanism, and potential applications. In the second part, we focus on the classification of VCM from the viewpoint of materials, where both the magnetic medium and dielectric gating materials, and their influences on magnetic modulation efficiency are systematically described. In the third part, the nature of VCM is discussed in detail, including the conventional mechanisms of charge, strain, and exchange coupling at the interfaces of heterostructures, as well as the emergent models of orbital reconstruction and electrochemical effect. The fourth part mainly illustrates the typical performance characteristics of VCM, and discusses, in particular, * Corresponding author. The present review concludes with a discussion of the challenges and future prospects of VCM, which will inspire more in-depth research and advance the practical applications of this field.
