Users’ Experiences with the Use of Transaction Data to Estimate Consumption-Based Emissions in a Carbon Calculator

Abstract: With global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions ever increasing, we are currently seeing a renewed interest in carbon footprint calculators (or carbon calculators for short). While carbon calculators have traditionally calculated emissions based on user input about e.g., food, heating, and traveling, a new development in this area is the use of transaction data to also estimate emissions based on consumption. Such carbon calculators should be able to provide users with more accurate estimations, easier input possib… Show more

“…The authors point out that these dimensions are strongly correlated and can be reduced to two main components (connectivity and human capital), of which the use of the Internet shows causality with both independent dimensions. Barendregt et al (2020) studied the behaviour of online banking consumers in Sweden and the possibility of raising awareness about the impact of their behaviour on reducing GHG emissions. In this regard, many users are willing to connect their bank account to the online service provided by the mobile phone, even if some users perceived a high level of security risk.…”

“…These protocols are time consuming and expensive to apply at the industrial level. More recent solutions oriented to end users have performed automatic CF estimation from bank transactions [12] and employed social networking [40] to foster user engagement [41].…”

“…The carbon footprint of agricultural products is the main indicator for monitoring the efficiency and sustainability of the production processes in agriculture, or more broadly in the agri-food industry [16,17]. The use of CF calculators when assessing the environmental impact of food products [18] is becoming popular, which also influences their positive perception by consumers [19]. Borsato et al [20] presented the carbon footprint values for selected vegetables, where according to these data, cauliflower and broccoli had a CF value of 0.30 kg CO 2-e /kg, carrots 0.15 kg CO 2-e /kg and onions 0.10 kg CO 2-e /kg.…”
