In the present study, the Amphora coffeaeformis diatom was applied in different concentrations to the diet of Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) to investigate its potential effects in improving growth performance, as well as enhancing immune and antioxidant responses to control Aeromonas hydrophila infection. The tilapia fingerlings were divided into 4 groups, and for 4 weeks were fed A. coffeaeformis at various concentrations (0, 1, 2 and 3%). Growth‐stimulating activity from dietary A. coffeaeformis was observed, particularly in the 2% and 3% treatment groups. Furthermore, serum immunoglobulin M (IgM), nitric oxide (NO), malondialdehyde (MDA), total‐superoxide dismutase (T‐SOD), catalase (CAT), and glutathione peroxidase (GPx) were evaluated at the 2nd and 4th weeks from the onset of feeding and showed significant improvement (p < 0.05) in the 2 and 3% groups. At the end of the feeding trial, the tilapia were challenged via an intraperitoneal (IP) injection of virulent Aeromonas hydrophila. Fish survival, serum IgM, nitric oxide, MDA, T‐SOD, CAT, GPx, and liver, kidney, spleen, and gill histopathology were all evaluated post challenge. Significant improvements in both immunological and antioxidant parameters continued until the post‐challenge measurements. Overall survival was significantly increased in the 2 and 3% groups, compared to the control and 1% groups. Histopathological examination revealed a decrease in the degenerative and destructive effects of A. hydrophila infection on the liver, kidneys, spleen, and gill tissues, indicating that dietary A. coffeaeformis administered at concentrations of 2 and 3% could be recommended as a feed additive for the control of A. hydrophila infection in Nile tilapia.

The dramatic increase in using pesticides worldwide is aimed to improve agricultural growth productivity to increase food supply (Sekhon, 2014). Different types of pesticides (herbicides, insecticides and fungicides) can lead to ecological imbalance (Glusczak et al., 2011) and negative or even toxic effects, especially on the aquatic environment (Rossi et al., 2011) since it is the final destination of these pesticides through soil erosion and rainfall (Larras et al., 2013) as well as direct application (Annett et al., 2014). Serious adverse effects on human may result from the contamination of aquatic organisms with organic pollutants, including agricultural pesticides (Stara et al., 2013).

Tilapia culture is an important source of income and nutrition to many rural families. Since 2000, the production of tilapia increased and reached domestic and global markets. Major farmed species is Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus), in earthen ponds and cage cultures. Intensification contributed to global tilapia disease outbreaks, with bacterial infections causing mortalities and morbidities, threatening sustainable production. At tilapia farms, high nutrient concentrations, water temperature and fish densities enhance bacterial growth including virulent bacterial clones and potential zoonotic bacteria. Global warming favours this. This review respectively provides a comprehensive overview of the most common and emerging bacterial pathogens, diseases, clinical presentations and diagnostics of tilapia, including bacteria and diseases with zoonotic potential. First, common bacterial disease outbreaks, including streptococcosis, motile Aeromonas septicaemia, francisellosis, columnaris disease and vibriosis are described. Then, information on emerging bacterial infections of concern for tilapia, like edwardsiellosis through Edwardsiella ictaluri and E. tarda, as well as Aeromonas schubertii is provided. Reports of infectious bacterial tilapia disease outbreaks from other bacteria, including Lactococcus garvieae, Aerococcus viridans, Pseudomonas spp., Mycobacterium marinum and Chlamydia spp., and others are reviewed. Furthermore, bacteria with zoonotic potential, like Streptococcus agalactiae ST283, S. iniae, Aeromonas sp., E. tarda, Vibrio vulnificus pathovar (pv) piscis and M. marinum are included in the review, to provide the most current overview of the disease risks affecting production and post‐harvest stages. Additionally, the status and risks of antimicrobial resistance in bacteria from tilapia and other cultured fish through imprudent use of antibiotics, and its future at a global level are provided.
