In this paper is presented an analysis of gland seals operation and their influence on the performance of low power steam turbine with two cylinders and steam reheating, which can be used in marine applications. Performed analysis presents a comparison of steam turbine main operating parameters when gland seals operation is neglected (as usual in the most of the literature) and when steam mass flow rates leaked through all gland seals are taken into consideration. Steam mass flow rate leakage through all gland seals reduces produced power of the whole turbine and both of its cylinders. Operation of gland seal mounted at the inlet in the first cylinder of any steam turbine (cylinder which operates with the steam of the highest pressure) has the most notable influence on the reduction of the whole turbine produced power. Gland seal mounted at the outlet of the last turbine cylinder (cylinder which operates with the steam of the lowest pressure) did not have any influence on the reduction of steam turbine produced power. In any detail analysis of a steam turbine (especially the complex turbine with multiple cylinders), gland seals operation should be considered due to their notable influence on the turbine performance.

This paper presents an analysis of the low duty compressor for marine steam generators and its running conditions. The analysed low duty compressor was observed under three different running zones caused by a throttled flow towards main steam generators. All examples were explained according to real exploitation conditions. As the low duty compressor has the highest influence on the flame stability for the main steam generators while running, it is very important to observe the constant flow towards the main steam generators. Possible flow fluctuation implies instabilities which are explained in the article and the same have to be avoided in order to assure a reliable life span of the low duty compressor and smooth operation of the main steam generators. Furthermore, for preventing efficiency losses of a steam power plant, some methods for avoiding surge effects are emphasized and recommended.

The Traveling salesman problem (TSP) defines the problem of finding the optimal path between multiple points, connected by paths of a certain cost. This paper applies that problem formulation in the maritime environment, specifically a path planning problem for a tour boat visiting popular tourist locations in Medulin, Croatia. The problem is solved using two evolutionary computing methods – the genetic algorithm (GA) and the simulated annealing (SA) - and comparing the results (are compared) by an extensive search of the solution space. The results show that evolutionary computing algorithms provide comparable results to an extensive search in a shorter amount of time, with SA providing better results of the two.
