Yeasts in the attine ant–fungus mutualism: Diversity, functional roles, and putative biotechnological applications

Abstract: Insects interact with a wide variety of yeasts, often providing a suitable substrate for their growth. Some yeast-insect interactions are tractable models for understanding the relationships between the symbionts. Attine ants are prominent insects in the Neotropics and have performed an ancient fungiculture of mutualistic basidiomycete fungi for more than 55-65 million years. Yeasts gain access to this sophisticated mutualism, prompting diversity, ecological, and biotechnological studies in this environment. W… Show more

“…H. uvarum facilitates the exploitation of ripening fruit, since it grows equally well on ripe and unripe raspberries, which is another facet of its association with D. suzukii . Similarly, a match between plant substrate and fungal growth conditions regulates mutualistic interactions in fungus‐gardening ants (Bizarria et al., 2021; Fine Licht et al., 2010; Richard et al., 2005).…”

“…Also, Leucocoprinus sp. has already been reported in fungiculture association with this ant species (Bizarria et al 2022). For the Macrocybe titans, there are already records of occurring near nests of unidentified leafcutter ants in Costa Rica (Pegler et Brazilian Journal of Animal and Environmental Research, Curitiba, v.5, n.4, p. 3935-3960, out./dez., 2022 Mueller and Mata, 2001).…”

“…Even more fascinating is the fact that black yeasts of the genus Phialophora and associates (Ascomycota: Chaetothyriales) have been reported to be associated with the attine ant symbiosis ( Figure 1 ; Little and Currie, 2007 ; Bizarria et al, 2022 ). Black yeasts are parasites known to derive nutrients from and suppress the growth of attine-ant Pseudonocardia ( Little and Currie, 2007 ).…”
