Luteolin, which is structurally classified under the flavonoids, is naturally distributed abundant among medicinal plants, vegetables and fruits. The wound healing effects of Luteolin ointments were evaluated for incision and excision wound models on non-diabetic and Streptozotocin induced diabetic rats by using macroscopical, biomechanical, biochemical and histopathological methods. Two different concentrations (0.5 % and 1 % (w/w)) of the Luteolin ointment were prepared with the mixture of glycol stearate:propylene glycol:liquid paraffin (3:6:1) and 0.5 g of the ointments were applied topically on wounds once daily for 7 and 14 days. During the experiments, wounds were visually observed, photographically documented and wound areas were measured. After 7 and 14 days treatment, animals were sacrificed under anesthesia and hydroxyproline measurement and biomechanical analysis were performed. Histopathology of the wound area was evaluated considering features of re-epithelialization, thickness of the granulation tissue, angiogenesis, presence of inflammation, number of mast cells. Outcomes of this study revealed that Luteolin ointments improved wound healing process of skin tissue both in non-diabetic and diabetic wounds. The best wound healing activity was observed in incision and excision wounds (97.6 %, 96.1 %, respectively) treated with 0.5 % (w/w) Luteolin ointment on day 14 according to macroscopic results.

Unlike conventional physical and chemical methods, the biogenic synthesis of gold nanoparticles (GNPs) is considered a green and non-toxic approach to produce biocompatible GNPs that can be utilized in various biomedical applications. This can be achieved by using plant-derived phytochemicals to reduce gold salt into GNPs. Several green synthesized GNPs have been shown to have antibacterial effects, which can be applied in wound dressings to prevent wound infections. Therefore, the aim of this study is to synthesize biogenic GNPs from the South African Galenia africana and Hypoxis hemerocallidea plants extracts and evaluate their antibacterial activity, using the Alamar blue assay, against bacterial strains that are known to cause wound infections. Additionally, we investigated the toxicity of the biogenic GNPs to non-cancerous human fibroblast cells (KMST-6) using 3-[4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl]-2,5-diphenyl tetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay. In this paper, spherical GNPs, with particle sizes ranging from 9 to 27 nm, were synthesized and fully characterized. The GNPs from H. hemerocallidea exhibited antibacterial activity against all the tested bacterial strains, whereas GNPs produced from G. africana only exhibited antibacterial activity against Pseudomonas aeruginosa. The GNPs did not show any significant toxicity towards KMST-6 cells, which may suggest that these nanoparticles can be safely applied in wound dressings.

IZVLEČEK Spremembe vsebnosti rutina in kvercetina v vzorcih tatarske ajde (Fagopyrum tataricum (L.) Gaertn.) od spravila pridelka do priprave kruha Cilj raziskave je bil ugotoviti vpliv predhodne hidrotermične obdelave zrnja tatarske ajde, mlečno kislinske fermentacije ter priprave in peke na spremembe, dostopnost in vsebnost flavonoidov rutina in kvercetina v vzorcih priprave in peke kruhov s kislim testom iz tatarske ajde. Cilj je bil tudi ugotoviti, kakšna je antioksidativna aktivnost v vzorcih priprave in peke kruha iz tatarske ajde in hidrotermično obdelane (HT) tatarske ajde. Vsebnost rutina in kvercetina je bila v vzorcih priprave in peke določena z metodo HPLC, antioksidativna aktivnost pa z metodama PCL in ORAC FL. Ugotovili smo, da so predhodna hidrotermična obdelava zrnja, mlečno kislinska fermentacija ter priprava in peka vplivale na vsebnost skupnih flavonoidov ter vsebnost in pretvorbo rutina v kvercetin v vzorcih tatarske ajde in HT tatarske ajde. Vsebnost kvercetina se je v vzorcih med postopkom priprave in peke povečevala, med tem ko se je vsebnost rutina zmanjševala. Omenjeni postopki obdelave zrnja in vzorcev priprave in peke so vplivali tudi na spremembe skupne antioksidativne aktivnosti vzorcev tatarske ajde in HT tatarske ajde. Pri predhodni hidrotermični obdelavi zrnja tatarske ajde se pri naši raziskavi ni pokazal vpliv na vsebnost taninov v vzorcih priprave in peke. Dodatek moke oljne kadulje (chie) (Salvia hispanica L.) kruhu iz moke tatarske ajde v razmerju (90:10) je vplival na izboljšanje prehranskih lastnosti kruha, kar je bilo izraženo predvsem v povečanju vsebnosti n-3 (omega-3) maščobnih kislin in povečanju skupne antioksidativne aktivnosti. Naše ugotovitve so lahko v pomoč pri razvoju kruhov z vsebnostjo snovi, koristnih za zdravje. Ključne besede: (Fagopyrum tataricum (L.) Gaertn.), tatarska ajda, kislo testo, kruhi, rutin, kvercetin
