In the 100 years since Freud’s Group Psychology and the Analysis of the Ego (1921) was published, much has changed and much has stayed the same. This article explores the resonance of Freud’s book with contemporary issues around inclusion and exclusion, masses and assemblies, and the question of how a practice of ethical relationality can emerge across a shared social terrain. Drawing on concepts from psychosocial studies and leaning especially on Judith Butler’s recent work on assemblies and on grievability, I argue that patterns of division and exclusion, notably along racialized lines, emerge from insistently violent responses to vulnerability. Understanding the intricate intersection between what are usually differentiated as ‘personal’ and ‘social’ domains in ways recognizable within group analysis, is an important move towards contesting this violence and towards a situation in which all lives become grievable.

The context for this paper is an attempt to think through the possibilities and challenges of nonviolent resistance, with the shadow of the Israel-Palestine conflict looming over it. Drawing on the work of Jessica Benjamin, I outline how a theory of recognition becomes one of acknowledgement through the inclusion of a notion of a witnessing 'third'. This third is actively implicated in the injury caused by oppression and is called upon to do something about it. I go on to use Judith Butler's account of the challenge of nonviolence to draw out some lessons on issues of vulnerability, cohabitation and justice. Finally, I return to the question of the kind of witnessing third that might make a difference.

Supervision for our times: countertransference and the rich legacy of the Budapest School

In this paper I ask what an investigation of the Budapest model of supervision adds to our psychoanalytic imaginary. The Budapest model confronts us with a number of crucial questions for contemporary psychoanalysis, including the question of envisaging ways of working on the countertransference of the analyst to their patient. I discuss the forgetfulness that surrounds the Budapest model, and I read it in relation to the unsettling issues it stirs up, including those of authority, horizontality, and the ethics of psychoanalysis. In this model, supervision can be seen as a form of "double dreaming" or of "dreaming up of a dream". In particular, in drawing on the writings of Sándor Ferenczi and Michael Balint, I point to some principles behind the Budapest model and to the epistemic, technical, and ethical implications of their ideas. I also work toward a Ferenczian "translation" of the idea of "parallel process".
