Wood vegetation in Atlantic rain forest remnants in Sorocaba (São Paulo, Brazil)

Abstract: The Atlantic rain forest is in a very fragmented condition due to the high deforestation in recent decades, thus even remnants of secondary vegetation may be considered important for maintaining the ecological and microclimatic functions on a regional scale. This represents the first plant composition study conducted in the area, located in Sorocaba (São Paulo, Brazil), a region relatively unknown in terms of vegetation. Our aims were to survey the vegetation, verify the vegetation formation in which the sampl… Show more

“…For example, Mamede et al (2001) found 756 vascular plant species in the Serra da Juréia, and Lima et al (2011) found 1,143 species in Carlos Botelho State Park. However, whereas we found that Rubiaceae was the richest family in the Reserva Votorantim, other studies in São Paulo state showed Myrtaceae, Fabaceae, and Orchidaceae as predominant (Lima et al 2011;Kortz 2014). This difference may be attributable to a bias in our sampling process, as certain specimens, mainly Myrtaceae and Fabaceae, were collected when sterile, and consequently we were unable to identify them to species.…”

“…(angico vermelho), Inga vera (Wild) (ingá), and Lonchocarpus cultratus (Vell) (embira de sapo) were used. All are commonly used in reforest programs (NOGUEIRA JUNIOR et al, 2014;GOÉS & QUINTELA, 2015;GAGETTI et al, 2016;KORTZ et al, 2014).…”

“…The average annual temperature and rainfall are 22ºC and 1490 mm, respectively (CBA 2006). The vegetation in our landscape is comprised by a transitional ecotone between evergreen and seasonally dry forests, and savanna-like (Cerrado) vegetation Kortz et al 2014). The region has a long history of habitat disturbance and is heavily fragmented with 83% of the remnants in the watershed smaller than 20 ha (Kronka et al 2005).…”

“…Myrtaceae and Fabaceae are the most common families in those fragments and lianas are also abundant. Some plant species from Cerrado are found in the pasturelands (Kortz et al 2014). Details about the floristics of the study site can be found in Kortz et al (2014).…”
