Women with more severe degrees of temporomandibular disorder exhibit an increase in temperature over the temporomandibular joint

Abstract: FAI score was associated with skin temperature over the TMJ, as determined by infrared thermography, in this sample. Women with more severe TMD demonstrated a bilateral increase in skin temperature.

“…DIT has also been applied to evaluation of TMD patients [23,24], however, its diagnostic value and usefulness are not consistent according to both the region of temperature measurements and subject population like myogenous or arthrogenous [3,6,13,17,18,24]. TMD can affect other anatomic structures of the masticatory system simultaneously and many arthrogenous TMD patients often accompany masticatory muscle pain, therefore, this comorbidity and heterogeneity of study population may be thought to affect and bias the analyses of thermal characteristics of each patient population.…”

“…Despite optimistic earlier studies suggesting the ability of thermal imaging to discriminate patients with an unspecific temporomandibular disorder with an accuracy in the range of 85-90% [169]- [172], recent studies focusing on diagnostics of specific conditions have shown mixed accuracies. For example, while skin temperature was proven to be associated with chronic myogenous temporomandibular disorder [173], thermal imaging failed to provide an accurate diagnostic of both this disorder [174], [175] and arthralgia [176] However in these studies, the severity of the participants' conditions was not assessed before the tests, as demonstrated relevant in a following study [177].…”

“…The rationale behind the prevalence of TMD has not been elucidated yet, but the influence of hormones, mainly estrogen, has been suggested. Dibai-Filho et al 11 declared that women are mostly affected by TMD owing to anatomic, biological, and hormonal factors.…”
