Abstract: This paper discusses the near-field inductive coupling wireless power transfer (WPT) at the system level, with detailed analyses on each state-of-the-art WPT output voltage regulation topologies. For device miniaturization and power loss reduction, several novel architectures for efficient WPT were proposed in recent years to reduce the number of passive components as well as to improve the system efficiency or flexibility. These schemes are systematically studied and discussed in this paper. The main contribu… Show more

“…IPT is widespread among all applications where physical electrical connections cannot be used or when power is supplied to moving objects. IPT is then an effective solution for supplying power to body implanted medical devices [1,2], moving trolleys through defined paths [3,4] or underwater applications [5,6]. Currently, this technology is widely used for recharging mobile devices such as smartphones [7,8] or other daily used electronic devices [9,10].…”

“…Near field IRC and near field capacitive coupling methods are primarily investigated in the above mentioned applications [3,4]. Much research work has addressed the usage of near field IRC in biomedical implants and also some of the implants like pacemaker; chronic implants are available on the market with inductive powering technologies [5,6]. Even though the IRC method is well studied and established with standards, it has its own set of confinements, like requirements of rigid coil structure, less frequency bandwidth, and distributed electromagnetic fields on the tissue.…”

“…Regardless of the fact that prevailing technologies have been designed with a specific application in mind, WPT has been widely adapted in applications ranging from smart phones, consumer electronics, vehicle charging to medical applications which include portable medical devices, smart animal tracking systems, surgical tools and implantable medical devices [6][7][8]. The majority of portable devices use built-in batteries for power source, therefore a WPT system seems a convenient way to provide power to batteries in the electrical devices such as smart phones, electric vehicles, toothbrushes, etc.…”
