Forecasting habitat suitability and connectivity can be central to both controlling invasive species expansion and promoting native species conservation, especially under changing climate conditions. This study aimed to identify and prioritize areas in Spain to control the expansion of one of the most harmful invasive species in Europe, while conserving its counterpart, the endangered European mink, under current and future conditions. We used dynamic ensemble habitat suitability and connectivity models to predict species ranges and movement routes considering likely climate change under three emission scenarios. Then, using habitat availability metrics, we prioritized areas for invasive mink control and native mink conservation and classified them into different management zones that reflected the overlap between species and threat from American to European minks. Results suggest that both species are likely to experience declines in habitat and connectivity under climate change scenarios with significantly larger declines by the end of the century for European minks (72 and 80% respectively) than for American minks (41 and 32%). Priority areas for management of both species varied over time and across emission scenarios, with a general shift in priority habitat towards the North-East of the study area. Our findings demonstrate how dynamic habitat suitability and connectivity approaches can guide long-term management strategies to control invasive species and conserve native species while accounting for likely landscape changes. The simultaneous study of both invasive and native species can support prioritized management action and inform management planning of the intensity, extent, and techniques of intervention depending on the overlap between species.

The American mink Neogale vison is an invasive alien species in Europe that threatens endemic biodiversity and can transmit zoonotic diseases, including the SARS‐CoV‐2 virus. The last attempt to map the geographic range of this species in Europe, at continental scale, dates back to 2007. We aimed to update the distribution map of the feral American mink and assess its temporal trends. The information we collected was critically analysed with the aim of improving future monitoring protocols and data collection. We gathered and standardised data from 34 databases, covering 32 countries. Through 3 five‐year periods from 2007 to 2021, changes in range size, hunting bags and capture statistics were analysed. We also reviewed the current situation of mink farming in the different European countries and recorded population control schemes. The American mink is now widespread in the Baltic States, France, Germany, Iceland, Ireland, Poland, Scandinavia, Spain and the UK. The species is reported to be absent in some areas (e.g. parts of the UK, Iceland and Norway). Data are deficient for several countries, mainly in south‐eastern Europe. These findings indicate that, during the last 15 years, the species has continued to spread across the continent, increasing its potential extent of occurrence in most countries. Our effort to collect and harmonise data across international borders highlighted information gaps and heterogeneity in data quality. Updated distribution data on the species provided here will aid risk assessment and risk management policies. These actions require a coordinated effort for population monitoring at continental level. Monitoring effort and data collection should be intensified in south‐eastern Europe to improve data on the current distribution of this invasive species.

Zoonoses não se processam em um único sentido na dinâmica de infecção, de animais para humanos. Assim como outras doenças, já vem sendo demonstrada a capacidade de infecção de animais pelo SARS-CoV-2 a partir do contato com humanos. O objetivo desse trabalho é realizar uma revisão narrativa, através da análise da literatura científica atual, quanto à possibilidade de zoonose e zoonose reversa do SARS-CoV-2 sob a perspectiva de Saúde Única e possíveis implicações para o futuro da evolução do vírus. Pesquisas recentes apontam que o vírus mostrou potencial de zoonose reversa, infectando mamíferos em diversas partes do planeta. Mustelídeos, hamsters, felinos e primatas do velho mundo são os animais que apresentaram maior susceptibilidade ao SARS-CoV-2. A zoonose reversa do SARS-CoV-2 favoreceu o surgimento de variantes cujas mutações mostraram-se adaptadas às diversas características fisiológicas particulares das espécies animais afetadas, com capacidade de retorno ao ser humano. O SARS-CoV-2 provavelmente será persistente entre mamíferos após a onda pandêmica que afetou a humanidade. Processos de mitigação da zoonose e zoonose reversa do SARS-CoV-2 sob a perspectiva da Saúde Única requerem ações em três níveis: ambiente humano, relações entre humanos e animais domésticos ou cativos, e vigilância e controle do vírus circulante entre animais de vida livre.
