“…Our results provide additional evidence for the anatomically distributed effects of focal CNS lesions, a phenomenon clearly recognized in the 19 th and early 20 th centuries [ 71 ] and further documented in contemporary brain imaging studies [ 78, 103, 3 ]. Focal lesions are often followed by an extensive anatomical and functional reorganization of sensory and motor pathways [ 31, 114, 115, 75, 30 ].…”

“…The main determinant of CCD was therefore the number of functionally impaired neurons and the resulting interruption of the cortico-ponto-cerebellar pathway, not the severity of the ischemic damage. This supports previous studies in which distinct thalamic infarctions without affecting the internal capsule did not cause CCD (Szelies et al, 1991). Due to the limited patient number, we did not correct for different localizations within the MCA territory since our study focused on a longitudinal analysis of patients.…”

“…Our findings, however, agree with results obtained by Rousseaux et al [16], who. using SPECT and l33Xe, described the involvement of single cortical regions con secutive to thalamic infarction, and with those reported by Szelies et al [7], who also observed differential depression of cortical rCMRGlc depending on the loca tion of the infarction in their group of patients.…”
