There is a need to be able to assess adult interest as a variable that can develop. In contrast to vocational interest measures in which interest is assessed as a stable, trait-like characteristic of a person, the Interest Development Scale (IDS) assesses interest as a cognitive and motivational variable that develops (Hidi & Renninger, 2006). Three studies are reported on the construction and validation of the IDS, a domain general assessment of adult interest development. In each, the participant group was drawn from the diverse Amazon Mechanical Turk (MTurk), and interest was not restricted to a specific domain. Using exploratory factor analysis and parallel analysis, we used Study 1 (n = 348) to identify items and underlying factors. These factors are information seeking, motivation to reengage, persistence, self-regulation, and value. Results from Study 2 (n = 515) confirmed the factor structure identified in Study 1 and examined convergent, discriminant, and concurrent validity of the items. Findings demonstrated that the IDS was a reliable and valid measure of domain-general interest for adults. In Study 3 (n = 103), results from mixed methods further revealed that the IDS differentiated between earlier and later phases of interest development. The factor motivation to reengage differentiated among the three phases studied, and the other 4 factors distinguished between earlier and later phases of interest.

The global aging trend compels older adults to navigate the evolving digital landscape, presenting a substantial challenge in mastering smartphone applications. While Augmented Reality (AR) holds promise for enhancing learning and user experience, its role in aiding older adults' smartphone app exploration remains insufficiently explored. Therefore, we conducted a two-phase study: (1) a workshop with 18 older adults to identify app exploration challenges and potential AR interventions, and (2) tech-probe participatory design sessions with 15 participants to co-create AR support tools. Our research highlights AR's effectiveness in reducing physical and cognitive strain among older adults during app exploration, especially during multi-app usage and the trial-and-error learning process. We also examined their interactional experiences with AR, yielding design considerations on tailoring AR tools for smartphone app exploration. Ultimately, our study unveils the prospective landscape of AR in supporting the older demographic, both presently and in future scenarios.

Computer Science Outreach Workshop and Interest Development: A Longitudinal Study

This longitudinal study investigates the impact of an extra-curricular programming workshop in student interest development in computer science. The workshop was targeted at 12-18-year old youngsters. A survey was sent to all previous participants with a known home address; 31.5% responded the survey (n = 197). This data was then combined with pre-workshop survey data, and analyzed with mixed methods. Positive development of interest was discovered for 57% of the respondents, of which nearly all attributed their interest increase to the workshop at least partly (92%). Qualitative inspection revealed that the workshop provided three anchors that facilitated students' reengagement with programming and development of interest: disciplinary content, a concrete artifact built by students themselves, and tools. Neutral development and interest regress were also discovered, though the impact of the workshop on these interest trajectories remains unclear.
