“…The job of leadership in this field is clearly challenging. A senior international schools’ recruiter describes the process of finding an international school Head as ‘looking for God on a good day’ (Roberts & Mancuso, 2014, p. 103), stressing the significant power focused in one position, prompting a discussion of leadership models that empower and distribute over models that direct and transact, as explored below. However, despite the clear demand, little is known about this oblique phenomenon.…”

“…Citing the international school director recruitment process, Roberts and Mancuso (2014, p.103) describe the process of finding a director for an international school as ‘Looking for God on a good day.’ Viewed critically, it is unclear whether non-English God-like leaders are in short supply, or whether they are in short supply because they are not ‘English’. Nevertheless, the leader is expected to navigate between the IB, the identity of the school, and that of her/his vision.…”

“…In cost terms, the greatest threat to schools comes from teachers. With between two-thirds and three-quarters of school fees spent on staff salaries (The Economist, 2009) and with, as Roberts and Mancuso (2014) argued in a previous issue of this journal, teacher retention and salary packages closely linked, salary costs are a significant factor in the profitability of schools. Teachers could, in theory, demand increases to pay and conditions such that profitability was reduced, and the competitiveness of the industry increased.…”
