Screen reader plugins are small pieces of downloadable codes that enhance the capabilities of screen readers and often improve accessibility. In this paper, we aim at understanding the user experience of screen readers' plugins, why screen reader users use plugins, who develops plugins, and how plugins are distributed and maintained. To that end, we conducted a study with 14 blind screen reader users. Our study revealed that plugins are useful -from solving minor compatibility problems to enabling blind users to work effortlessly with their preferred screen readers. Among many findings, our study revealed that blind users like plugins for addressing accessibility issues, installing plugins is easy, but finding a plugin is difficult, only a handful people develop plugins, the lack of financial incentive plays in the slow growth of the plugin ecosystem, and the dire need for a central plugin store. In the end, we make some recommendations on how to make the ecosystem better. Key recommendations include creating a central repository for all plugins, engaging third-party developers, and raising general awareness about the plugins. We believe our findings will inspire accessibility researchers to embrace the plugin-based distribution model and focus on improving it.CCS Concepts: • Human-centered computing → Empirical studies in accessibility; Accessibility systems and tools.

____________________________________________________________Current approaches to accessible computing share a common goal of making technology accessible to users with disabilities. Perhaps because of this goal, they may also share a tendency to centralize disability rather than ability. We present a refinement to these approaches called ability-based design that consists of focusing on ability throughout the design process in an effort to create systems that leverage the full range of human potential. Just as user-centered design shifted the focus of interactive system design from systems to users, ability-based design attempts to shift the focus of accessible design from disability to ability. Although prior approaches to accessible computing may consider users' abilities to some extent, ability-based design makes ability its central focus. We offer seven ability-based design principles and describe the projects that inspired their formulation. We also present a research agenda for ability-based design.

For accessibility practitioners, creating and deploying novel multimedia interactions for people with disabilities is a nontrivial task. As a result, many projects aiming to support such accessibility needs come and go, or never make it to a public release. To reduce the overhead involved in deploying and maintaining a system that transforms web content into multimodal renderings, we created an open-source, modular microservices architecture as part of the IMAGE project. This project aims to design richer means of interacting with web graphics than is afforded by a screen reader and text descriptions alone. To benefit the community of accessibility software developers, we discuss this architecture and explain how it provides support for several multimodal processing pipelines. Beyond illustrating the initial use case that motivated this effort, we further describe two use cases outside the scope of our project in order to explain how a team could use the architecture to develop and deploy accessible solutions for their own work. We then discuss our team’s experience working with the IMAGE architecture, informed by discussions with six project members, and provide recommendations to other practitioners considering applying the framework to their own accessibility projects.
