Wearable Technology for Chronic Wound Monitoring: Current Dressings, Advancements, and Future Prospects

Abstract: Chronic non-healing wounds challenge tissue regeneration and impair infection regulation for patients afflicted with this condition. Next generation wound care technology capable of in situ physiological surveillance which can diagnose wound parameters, treat various chronic wound symptoms, and reduce infection at the wound noninvasively with the use of a closed loop therapeutic system would provide patients with an improved standard of care and an accelerated wound repair mechanism. The indicating biomarkers … Show more

“…Hypothetically, combining the use of markers such as IL-1β with analyses of MMPs and bacterial antigens could yield higher diagnostic sensitivity and specificity with respect to wound status, enabling a simultaneous determination of bacteria, host proteolytic activities, as well as selected cytokines. Indeed, ongoing research on biosensors which can be incorporated into dressings could make future integration of such capabilities in clinical use possible (35). The levels of biomarkers such as the cytokines determined here were therefore calculated relative to the surface area as well as total protein content, and thus of high relevance for development of sensors measuring total biomarker load or concentration, respectively.…”

“…Therefore, wound care domain required such wound monitoring system that may also consider wound internal and external factors for wounds assessment, rather than just wound appearance. In health care domain there are many applications which designed to monitor different diseases but wound care domain still required such techniques and sensing system which can identify different factors of wound area including temperature, blood pressure, oxygen and infection status of wound using biosensor [11]. In healthcare domain researchers proposed a lot of wearable devices for health centric task i.e.…”

“…2 VA, VB, VC, and VD will ensure that there is no risk of the dressing adhering to the wound surface as seen with traditional cotton gauze dressings. This is especially critical in excess wound drainage, where wound redressing can cause tissue injury thus slowing down the wound healing process [21]. The deposition of the hydrogels loaded on the fibers can be clearly seen as a dense white opacity within the fibers (Fig.…”
