Wear Mechanisms

Abstract: This chapter discusses some of the important wear mechanisms, including abrasion, adhesion, tribochemical -oxidation, fretting, and erosion. While a major part of this chapter focuses on the physics of material removal mechanisms in terms of the physicochemical changes at tribocontacts, efforts have also been made to discuss the quantifi ed correlation of material removal with material parameters (hardness, toughness, elastic modulus) as well as operating parameters (load, sliding velocity, etc.).
