Waterborn Genotoxicity in Southern Brazil Using Astyanax bifasciatus (Pisces: Teleostei)

As principais fontes de contaminação do Rio Ijuí são o escoamento superficial das lavouras e o esgoto doméstico. O teste de micronúcleo (MN) em peixes é uma ferramenta útil na avaliação da qualidade da água, indicando a presença de substâncias tóxicas. Este estudo teve como objetivo avaliar a qualidade da água do Rio Ijuí utilizando o teste de MN em uma espécie de peixe nativa da família Characidae. Os indivíduos foram coletados no inverno (2012) e no verão (2013) em dois pontos no Rio Ijuí, distantes aproximadamente 170 Km, os quais apresentam a agricultura como principal atividade econômica, mas diferem em densidade demográfica. A frequência de MN não apresentou diferenças entre os locais. No entanto, em ambos os pontos, a frequência de MN no verão (2,15‰ e 2,13‰, nos pontos 1 e 2, respectivamente) foi significativamente maior do que no inverno (0,35‰ no ponto 1 e 0,45‰ no ponto 2). Não houve diferenças significativas para as outras anormalidades nucleares. Os resultados indicam a ocorrência de variação temporal na contaminação mutagênica da água do Rio Ijuí e que pode estar relacionada às atividades agrícolas, já que o verão é o período em que os agrotóxicos são utilizados com maior frequência na região. In recent years, the Brazilian agriculture production expanded by 900 % over 1990, while the cultivated areas increased at a rate of 2 % per year. Due to this expansion, pulverization turned from manual to mechanical using ground equipment and aircraft. As a result of the new tendencies, recent statistics show the negative impacts on the health of pilots and operators of terrestrial machinery and on the environment. The present study evaluates the concept of an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) for pulverization of defensive products, named here as AVANT. In this study, new airfoils are evaluated, lifting line technique, vortex and panels method are used to define the geometry of the wings, fuselage and tail elements. We evaluated the genotoxic potential of surface water bodies in an area impacted by agrochemicals, in the Ibicoara-Mucugê agropole, Bahia and those within protected areas in Chapada Diamantina, Bahia, Brazil, using the micronucleus test as a biomarker in tadpole species native neotropicals. Our hypothesis is that the closer to agricultural farms, the more affected by mutagenic and genotoxic substances will be the environment and resident organisms. The micronucleus frequencies were determined in tadpoles of 11 species collected in 11 surface water bodies in coffee, corn, vegetable, and pumpkin plantations, as well as in adjacent sites within a protection area. Tadpoles of seven species found in agricultural sites exhibited higher frequencies of micronuclei compared to the six species from the protected locations. The species Bokermannohyla oxente and Leptodactylus latrans collected in agricultural areas exhibited the highest frequencies of micronucleated erythrocytes compared to the populations from the protected areas (p <0.05). Our results indicate that compounds present in surface water bodies in agricultural areas of the Ibicoara-Mucugê farm have genotoxic effects on anurans, showing the stress responses caused by agricultural activities associated with the use of complex mixtures of pesticides. Thus, anurans are excellent sentinel species in environmental monitoring, previously indicating the effect of xenobiotics on the environment.
