-(Change in osmotic potential and soluble carbohydrates levels in Solanum lycocarpum St.-Hil. in response to water stress). Solanum lycocarpum is a typical species from the "cerrado" vegetation in Central Brazil and has shown drought resistance under environmental conditions. Osmotic adjustment refers to a decrease in osmotic potential caused by accumulation of solutes and the continuous accumulation of solutes must occur in tissues to maintain the water potential gradient necessary for cell enlargement and turgor maintenance. The influence of water stress on osmotic potential and soluble carbohydrate levels was investigated in this research. The analyses of the results showed a decrease in osmotic potential in response to water stress. An increase in the carbohydrate levels was observed in plants under stress conditions in greenhouse. Reducing sugars were the major contributors to soluble carbohydrates levels detected in leaves and roots. These results suggested that Solanum lycocarpum plants showed a mechanism of adaptation to survival in water stress conditions.RESUMO -(Alteração no potencial osmótico e teor de carboidratos solúveis em plantas jovens de lobeira (Solanum lycocarpum St.-Hil.) em resposta ao estresse hídrico). Solanum lycocarpum é uma espécie típica da vegetação do cerrado brasileiro e tem demonstrado resistência à seca que ocorre em seu ambiente. O ajustamento osmótico é um decréscimo do potencial osmótico causado pelo acúmulo de solutos nas células, o qual mantém o gradiente de potencial hídrico e, ao mesmo tempo, a turgescência necessária ao crescimento celular. A influência do estresse hídrico no potencial osmótico e no teor de carboidratos solúveis foi investigada neste trabalho. A análise dos resultados mostrou que as plantas de Solanum lycocarpum apresentaram redução significativa nos valores de potencial osmótico em resposta ao estresse hídrico. O aumento no teor de carboidratos solúveis foi verificado em plantas sob condições estressantes em casa de vegetação, em particular o de carboidratos redutores. Os resultados obtidos sugerem que esta espécie apresenta mecanismo de ajustamento osmótico, nas condições de estresse hídrico, adaptando-a à sobrevivência nessa condição.

How does Cariniana estrellensis respond to different irradiance levels?

Based on reports that variables related to photosynthesis (net assimilatory ratio and chloroplast pigments) are more plastic than the morphological and biochemical variables in a climax tropical species, Cariniana estrellensis, under contrasting irradiance, we hypothesised that plasticity of gas exchange variables is higher in relation to growth, biochemical and anatomical variables. Plants that were 14 months old were subjected to 200 up to 2000 lmol m -2 s -1 of photo synthetically active radiation (PAR) for 140 days. Growth increased up to 1400 lmol m -2 s -1 PAR and then decreased at 2000 lmol m -2 s -1 PAR (full sunlight). This was related to the rate of photosynthesis (A) which showed the same tendency as photosystem II performance index (PI ABS ). The greater thickness of the secondary xylem at 1400 lmol m -2 s -1 PAR indicated a higher water conductance capacity. The decrease in specific leaf area, elongation of mesophyll cells, and increase in stomatal density observed at higher irradiances were associated with higher leaf fructose and sucrose concentrations. We concluded that the better growth in partial shade was due to higher photosynthetic capacity. On the other hand, photosynthesis was inhibited equally in full sun and deep shade. The high adjustment capacity of C. estrellensis to wide amplitudes of irradiance was provided by greater plasticity of gas exchange variables in relation to growth, anatomical, and biochemical variables.

WO POT experiments were conducted to investigate the response of five divergent faba bean genotypes namely (NBL-Mar.3, NBL-5, L3, Nubariya-1 and Misr-1) against either drought or salt stresses with split plot design. To achieve this purpose; some morphological characteristics, pigments, carbohydrates, molecular markers, stress tolerance indices and polymorphic information content (PIC) were recorded.Expose the faba bean genotypes to water and salt stress leads to significant decrease in photosynthetic pigments, total carbohydrates and starch. A significant increase in total soluble sugar content with increasing the salt and water stress levels were detected in all genotypes. Tolerant genotypes (NBL-Mar.3 and NBL-5) have high chlorophyll, carbohydrates and starch content than sensitive genotypes (Nubariya-1 and Misr-1). Seed yield /plant presence wide range of differences among all genotypes in each of the two abiotic stresses in focus. This reflects a fluctuation response in each of the eleven tolerance indices. NBL-5 considered as the highest drought tolerant genotype while Misr-1 is the most sensitive one. Similar conclusion is true for NBL-Mar.3 as a best tolerant genotype under salinity experiment conditions while, Nubariya-1 and Misr-1 were the most sensitive one. The highest water deficit newly bred tolerant genotype (NBL-5) discriminated by either two positive specific markers at amplified fragments (AF) (45 and 61) or three negative amplicons at AF (30, 32 and 33). The salt tolerant genotype (NBLMar.3) own ten of the unique amplicons out of the 40 total number of specific markers (TSM) which including either the presence or absence of a given band. These specific markers could be successfully used as marker assisted selection (MAS) for the best genotypes utilizing in faba bean breeding programs.
