War against Coronavirus (COVID – 19) in Tanzania: Designing a Low Cost Automatic Water Tap

Abstract: In December 2019, an outbreak of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARSCoV-2) infection occurred in Wuhan, Hubei Province, China and spread across China and beyond. On February 12, 2020, WHO officially named the disease caused by the novel coronavirus as Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19). On January 30, 2020, WHO declared COVID-19 as the sixth public health emergency of international concern. One of the major preventions is frequent hand washing. An attempt has been made to design a low-cost a… Show more

“…More costefficient designs are emerging on the market concerning automated water, sanitizer, soap dispensers and other tools for eliminating contact and spreading the disease. The study done by Wanga et al illustrated how simple and low-cost technology nowadays can be in terms of designing automated handwashing stations in the shortage of time to combat COVID-19 in countries like Tanzania (Wanga & Pearce, 2020). They described the parts that they used to assemble the equipment and the system's flow in their report.…”

“…The infrared sensor in automated faucets and soap dispensers is undoubtedly a tremendous technological output for reducing contact and avoiding spreading diseases like COVID-19 and helping prevent recontamination of cleaned hands (Wanga & Pearce, 2020). However, the disadvantages that also come along with advanced technologies should not be neglected.…”

“…Brescia (2020) calls for the promotion of technological innovation for the facilitation of sustainable agriculture and food production systems. This article appreciates the work of Wanga et al (2020) in Tanzania among others for the call to adopt a lowcost automatic water tap that does not require the user to touch it but utilizes a microcontroller for water flow regulation. Humanistic social work calls for practitioners to promote such projects that add value to humanity.…”

“…Manderson and Wahlberg (2020) emphasize the need for improvement of access to safe water and sanitation for the effective fight against communicable diseases. Water is indispensable for industrial production and human existence (Wanga et al, 2020). Lack of access to safe water has a major effect on people's health.…”

“…Not only can they make calls and send text messages, but they can also access the Internet, make videos, and record information, among other things ( 8 ). In the era of the new coronavirus outbreak, the flexible and diverse applications of smartphones have made their communication function increasingly important ( 9 ). As the main carrier of the mobile Internet, smartphones have various functions such as entertainment, socialization, and shopping, which have facilitated human life but also brought about corresponding usage issues, one of which is smartphone dependence symptoms ( 10 ).…”
