Volatile Constituents of Large Cardamom (Amomum subulatum Roxb.)

Abstract: The steam-distilled volatile oil of the large cardamom (Amomum subulatum Roxb.), grown in Sikkim, India, was analysed by GC-MS. It consists of monoterpenic hydrocarbons (16.3%), oxygenated rnonoterpenes (75.2%) and sesquiterpenes (6.3%). Its major constituents are l,&cineole (61.3%), a-terpineol, a-and P-pinene and alloaromadendrene. Twenty-five compounds are reported for the first time.KEY WORDS large cardamom; Amomum subulatum Roxb.; Zingiberaceae; steam-volatile constituents; mono-and sesquiterpenes; GC-MS

“…This is well in line with some previously published analyses. 18,20,31,[33][34][35]39,45 However, one previous analysis reported very high levels of limonene together with other major compounds which were not present in our analysis. 25 Both oils contained very characteristic indane (=2,3-dihydro-1H-indene) derivatives: 4-indanecarbaldehyde (1) and 5-indanecarbaldehyde (2) and the respective dihydroindane compounds trans-and cis-2,3,3A,7A-tetrahydro-1H-indene-4-carbaldehyde (3/4) (Figure 1).…”

Exaggerated anticipatory anxiety is common in social anxiety disorder (SAD). Neuroimaging studies have revealed altered neural activity in response to social stimuli in SAD, but fewer studies have examined neural activity during anticipation of feared social stimuli in SAD. The current study examined the time course and magnitude of activity in threat processing brain regions during speech anticipation in socially anxious individuals and healthy controls (HC). Method Participants (SAD n = 58; HC n = 16) underwent functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) during which they completed a 90s control anticipation task and 90s speech anticipation task.

“…This compound was identified by the comparison of its MS spectrum with that of the authentic chemically synthesized compound. Although (E)and/or (Z)-myrcen-8-ols have already been found in insect pheromones and essential oils and recognized by their mass spectra (5,26,30,31), we failed to find any reported mass spectral data in the literature. To our knowledge, this is the first report of the mass spectrum of 2-methyl-6-methylen-2,7octadien-1-ol.…”

“…There are few reports available on pharmaceutical composition of black cardamom which indicate that out of 40 identified compounds of black cardamom, 1,8-cineole (65 %), β-Pinene (0.85 %), and α-Terpineol (7.92 %) are the main constituents [ 45 ].…”
