Vitamin D deficiency is associated with greater tumor size and poorer outcome in Merkel cell carcinoma patients

Abstract: The association between vitamin D deficiency and MCC characteristics and outcome, together with detection of the VDR in MCC cells, suggest that vitamin D could influence the biology of MCC.

“…A U-shaped relationship was observed for prediagnostic 25(OH)D and breast cancer mortality in the Swedish Malmo cohort (81). On the basis of blood samples taken after diagnosis, a higher level of 25(OH)D was associated with a lower colorectal cancer mortality (82,83), ovarian cancer mortality (84), and Merkel cell carcinoma mortality (although not significant) (85). Higher postdiagnostic 25(OH)D status was also associated with significantly improved pancreatic cancer survival in 1 study (86).…”

“…A few other studies have investigated the associations of circulating 25-OHD levels with prognosis in patients with other cancers, including lymphoma (15,30), leukemia (31,32), skin (33,34), head-and-neck (35,36), gastric (37), pancreatic (38), and prostate cancers (39, 40) with varying results (Table 4). Elevated 25-OHD levels were associated with better overall survival in patients with gastric cancer and lymphoma.…”

“…Diagnosis of MCC had been established between 1998 and 2013. Part of this cohort has previously been described [30,31]. Follow-up was performed as recommended in the French National Guidelines by clinical examination every 3-6 months and by intermittent imaging [lymph node ultrasonography and/or computed tomography (CT) scan] every 6-12 months.…”
