Vitamin D and bone health outcomes in older age

Abstract: The aim of this review is to summarise the evidence linking vitamin D to bone health outcomes in older adults. A plethora of scientific evidence globally suggests that large proportions of people have vitamin D deficiency and are not meeting recommended intakes. Older adults are at particular risk of the consequences of vitamin D deficiency owing to a combination of physiological and behavioural factors. Epidemiological studies show that low vitamin D status is associated with a variety of negative skeletal co… Show more

“…This includes Pakistan (1,2,(17)(18)(19)(20)(21). Vitamin D deficiency has been linked to the progression of osteoporosis and osteoporotic fractures arising from secondary hyperparathyroidism (1,11,16,19,(22)(23)(24)(25)(26)(27)(28)(29), and can also lead to rickets and osteomalacia (10,12,23,26,30) as well as potentially myopathy, helping explain why patients with nonspecific musculoskeletal pain syndrome can be refractory to standard therapies (31)(32)(33). Recent studies also suggest vitamin D has a potential role as an immune modulator and tumour suppressor (6,16,29,(34)(35)(36)(37)(38)(39), although others are less certain (40).…”

“…However, bariatric surgery, especially surgical procedures that affect nutritional absorption such as gastric bypass and biliopancreatic diversion, may also lead to nutritional deficiencies. Such deficiencies result in low levels of minerals and vitamins, including calcium and vitamin D , which are important for bone formation and maintenance of bone mineral density .…”
