Abstract: The aim of the present cross-sectional study was to assess the potential relationships between fruit and vegetable (FV) consumption and some oxidative stress markers in young adults, with particular emphasis on fibre and vitamin C intake. The study enrolled 246 healthy subjects (eighty-eight men and 158 women), with a mean age of 22 (SD 3) years and a mean BMI of 21·9 (SD 2·8) kg/m 2 . Dietary intake, anthropometry, blood pressure, lifestyle features and blood biochemical data were assessed with validated proc… Show more

“…Furthermore, smoking during pregnancy has been reported to be associated with high levels of LOOH, malondialdehyde, and free radicals, and with low levels of catalase, TAC, vitamin E, and β-carotene in cord or maternal blood (9). High consumption of vitamin C-rich fruits and vegetables was reported to be independently and significantly associated with reduced oxidised LDL levels and with increased TAC and glutathione peroxidase activity in healthy young adults (14). The combination of balanced food and exercise has also been stressed.…”

“…On the other hand, the DNA repair process is accelerated by various endogenous and exogenous factors, such as exercise and vitamins, in non-pregnant individuals (13,14). Previous studies have reported that the overall health of pregnant women and their infants is influenced by oxidative stress associated with lifestyle factors, such as smoking and vitamin intake (15)(16)(17).…”

“…Moreover, products with low amounts of simple sugars, low glycemic index or rich in fiber can be of interest in the management of blood glucose alterations [22][23][24]. In that context, fruits and fruit-derived products have shown some healthy benefits, improving carbohydrate, lipid profile and, oxidative status [25,26]. However, to date little is known about the effect of the addition of natural antioxidants to fruit-derived products, such as jams.…”

“…In a recent controlled clinical trial on adults with metabolic syndrome, 12 weeks supplementation of a healthy diet with mixed nuts resulted in no significant betweengroup difference in TAC, oxidized low-density lipoprotein and conjugated diene. 22 Moreover, despite the effect of fruits and vegetables consumption against OS, as judged by higher TAC, GSH-px and lower oxidized low-density lipoprotein levels, in healthy adults, 23 the independence of blood concentrations of both antioxidants and oxidative damage products to usual dietary intakes of fruits and vegetables in diabetic subjects (both types 1 and 2) has been reported earlier. 24 Higher serum SOD in the subjects with diabetes and their siblings indicates an upregulation of this molecule.…”
