“…Oral tretinoin has been administered in 3 open studies at doses ranging from 10 to 60 mg/d. 22,103,104 Although favorable results have been reported, the lack of clinical data and detailed criteria of efficacy, 103 the various dosages, and the association with topical tretinoin 104 make it impossible to assess the efficacy of systemic tretinoin. Only anecdotal reports on the efficacy of oral isotretinoin have been published, 21,105,106 with good results in patients whose lesions were resistant to other treatments.…”

“…107 Topical retinoic acid has been used in a few open studies lacking details on dosages or clinical evaluation. 104,108 Two comparative studies have examined 0.1% retinoic acid vs placebo to treat oral LP. 109,110 The majority of erosive and atrophic lesions of 23 nonrandomized patients improved, 109 but relapses were common after 3 months, as confirmed by an unpublished experience mentioned in the study.…”

“…Promising results have been obtained with substances belonging to the retinoid group. Ebner, Miescher & Raff (1973) and Gunther (1973Gunther ( , 1975 have reported favourable results in uncontrolled studies after topical treatment with vitamin A acid (VAA).Our group has recently reported favourable results from a controlled study, where o-17o VAA in a mucosal adhesive base was compared with the base alone (Sloberg et al, 1979). The systemic use of VAA for oral LP also exerts a favourable therapeutic effect but severe side-effects hamper its use (Stuttgen, 1975).Recent reports have indicated that an aromatic retinoid, etretinate ('Tigason', Ro to-9359), with a better therapeutic index than VAA, may be effective in alleviating the symptoms of oral LP (Ehrl, 1980;Maidhof, 1979;Scheiber & Plewig, 1978;Schuppli, 1978), but no controlled therapeutic series have yet been reported.…”

“…Vitamin A has been widely recommended for the treatment of recalcitrant skin diseases such as psoriasis, ichthyosis (5), acne vulgaris (10), lichen planus (7) and keratoderma palmaris et plantaris (12) on the basis of its theoretical regulatory function in keratin formation.…”
