Visual outcomes after spectacles treatment in children with bilateral high refractive amblyopia

Abstract: Refractive correction with good spectacles compliance improves VA and SA in young children with bilateral high refractive amblyopia. Patients with greater amounts of refractive error will achieve resolution of amblyopia with a longer time.

“…This condition might hinder the efficacy of optical treatment. Similar results were reported by previous studies, which noted that a large refractive error is a were risk factor for a poor prognosis for conventional treatment [ 7 , 12 ]. Further study is required but we propose that bilateral amblyopia, especially when accompanied with myopia, is more effectively treated using vision therapy than conventional treatment if the initial response to conventional treatment is suboptimal.…”

“…Twenty papers are included in the meta‐analysis. Fourteen of the papers included the data necessary to be able to calculate an ES, with four of those requiring data extraction from graphs using WebPlotDigitiser . Sixteen authors responded to our requests for information, with three of them providing data and one providing clarification about the study.…”

“…Data from a further five papers were made available through personal communication (C Birch in emails to L Asper, 14 and 19 April 2017; Xi Yu in an email to L Asper, 9 April 2017; and Raymond Kraker, Director, PEDIG Coordinating Center, in emails addressed to L Asper, 10 April 2017 and 31 May 2017). Table summarises the 20 papers in the meta‐analysis that investigated a total of 1,346 amblyopic eyes …”

“…Of note is that BCVA baseline is also negatively correlated to BCVA improvement after spectacle treatment for 6 months, this may be explained by the fact that the worse initial BCVA may have more room for visual improvement. However, results of previous studies varied due to different designs addressing different types of amblyopia [28][29][30]. Among these issues, most subjects were anisometropic and had strabismic amblyopia, with little consideration for a correlation between BCVA baseline and BCVA improvement speed in bilateral refractive amblyopia.…”
